CD Cabinet Advice Needed

Hi,

I'm getting tired of fishing around for CD's stacked in piles all around my listening room and need to buy a cabinet to house my 400 (rough estimate) CD's.  What are you guys using to house your CD's?  Also, I'm having a baby in July and want to make sure the stand is not tipsy or something that will topple on top of the baby if he runs into it.

I've looked at cabinets from Audio Advisor (they look pretty cool) and other products from Boltz (also cool looking) and can't decide what to get.

What do you guys use to store your CD's?

Who has good deals on CD racks or shelves?

Are there any DIY options that work better and look cool?

Thanks for your help!  I am going to do a review of my new system very soon.  I just got my new subwoofer amp hooked up and everything is sounding great.  Now if I can get that CD organization problem fixed, I'll be all set.

I have four Boltz racks.

Each time I fill one up, I buy another and can simply attach it to the previous ones.

How about a semi-DIY solution? Do you have any stores similar to a Hoot Judkins in your area? They sell finished and unfinished solid wood furiniture.

I bought an unfinished media case from the local store and finished it myself to match our other furniture for about 50% less than what it would have cost for a finished one. The one I bought is about 36"wide, 40" high and 6" deep, with 3 shelves. It looks like a small, thin bookcase. One of the nice things is that the Super Jewel cases for my DVD-A's, concert DVD's and SACD's that would not fit on the shelves of my old CD cabinet easily fit in this cabinet. It sits on the floor, but I have it attached to the wall to keep it from falling over in an earthquake.

The style I have is available as tall as 72". Also, visit the store, most of the places only show a small portion of their inventory on their websites. The cabinets I have isn't on Hoot's website, but I know they stock it because I was in the store last week.

Thanks guys, I may just get a boltz rack.  They don't have any Hoot Jenkins stores in my area.  Plus, I didn't think about it but the ability to expand the rack is a real selling point.

Adios,

I have two Boltz CD racks and DVD racks. I love the industrial look of steel and they are very strong. No bending or warping over the years like wood racks somtimes do.

I got tired of running out to the theater room where they are kept to always grab CD's so I bought a couple of the large Slappa cases. They are very nice cases and now I can just grab a case and bring it to whatever system I am listening to. I can also throw them in the car if I am taking a road trip and don't have to worry about CD cases getting beat up.

Ahh....I like how you think.  I had been sketching in my head a design for a CD cabinet my wife wants me to build for our collection and it basically is similar to the cube.  I call it a CD file cabinet.

Virtually all these solutions are lacking class when it comes to aesthetics.  Nothing classic or matching with nice furniture.  All modern and/or lacking in female touch.   I want to see some better solutions.

Unfortunately, I don't see anything that will work in my room.  The stuff is either ultra modern (I like the look but it doesn't go with my stuff) or a bit boring.  More importantly, my wife strongly dislikes everything I have shown her.  She's pretty cool and will let me get whatever I want but I would like to get something she doesn't hate...if possible.

Thanks again.

Jack,

When I needed solid wood furniture for my family room, and I couldn't find it in the local stores,  I had the Amish in Shipshawana, IN build it for me at VERY reasonable cost, to my EXACT specs.

Why don't you come up with a design and see if a local cabinet maker can make it for you?  If not, I will give you the name and addy of the Bontragers and I'm sure they can build you something...

Thanks Marbles!  Great idea, please PM me.  Also, did you know that Bontrager is a famous (cult like) former bike builder?  Keith Bontrager sold to Trek but he still designs wheels.  Bikes were my obsession prior to stereo gear...oh and prior to getting fat!

Cheers,

J

I like this apothicary style, the only drawback is that even with a second top unit it only holds a little over 500 cds.  http://www.avthinginitsplace.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=CD-375W&Affiliate=pg

My old buddy used to weld for Bontrager back in his heyday! I miss northern cal trails. Anyway, I came across a simple cabinet that has a japanesey sort of simplicity. I think it might have been part of this collection but I found mine at marshalls...then my bud found the same ones at cost plus for a little more money but very similar. They have those card catalog type label/pulls that allow me to alphabetize.

it is tall and narrow with like 6 cd sided drawers. Each drawer (sans plastic case) holds at least 50 cds. I get little plastic sleves with one side sort of fuzzy to stick them in..saves a ton of space and I hate dealing with stupid jewel cases. Mine is something like these

there are some cool things at ikea too

Like George I've got Boltz racks.

It's very nice to be able to just add on to it when I run out of room.

I keep thinking to myself that I should just buy some (relatively attractive) binders and a whole bunch of those binder inserts with CD sized pouches.  If one can find inserts that hold two CDs across and two CDs down, you could get four CDs plus the four booklets from the CD cases in each insert.  With twelve inserts per binder (which wouldn't be a very big binder), that's forty-eight discs.  So a four hundred CD collection could be housed, along with booklets, in about eight or nine binders.

Alphebetised, and labelled, I think this would be an easy and potentially attractive option, and minimises space as it allows you to throw away those pesky jewel cases.

Despite this, I have never done it.  I suspect, deep down, it might be a bad idea - but I'm not sure why.

Jack, being Amish they have no phone, so you have to go for a drive to talk to them....

Ervin's Millwork Shop
(Ervin S Bontrager)

8645 W. 100 South, Shipshewana, IN 46565
On State Road 5, 1.75 miles south of US20 to Stockyards, then west .75Mile

Very well worth the drive.

I forgot, you could also write them a letter with what you want with a sketch of it and they would send you a letter back with a quote and an approximate time table.
