When these Quad systems appeared, I swore they were better than Stereo, even though I'd never heard them, just because they had more channels

Welcome!  I had surround sound in the 1970s via time delays (https://www.teachmeaudio.com/mixing/equipment/effects/delay#:~:text=A%20delay%20unit%20works%20by,set%20by%20the%20mix%20control.)  The longer the delay (in milliseconds) the bigger the acoustic space it was simulating.  I heard quad recordings but never invested in the hardware.

   We had Quadrophonic Receiver & Headphones, which I thought was quite good. Must have been my brother who bought it because I didn't purchase it, which would then place it around '78 or '79.
   Then I heard my friends new Radio Shack stereo system and I concluded good stereo beats Quad. However when I started investing in audio around year 2000. My girlfriends low cost Surround system sounded better to me than my stereo. So after that I was sold on Surround Sound. With my Bryston Model T speakers & 2 corner speaker for 4 channel stereo. I get a better soundfield than I did with 5.1 Surround, but my room dimensions is also a factor.

The constant smartphone upgrades and multi-funtionality of those phones has put a dent in many industries including audio.  Decent quality is now avaiable at a lower price (inflation adjusted lower price) and immediate fulfillment in listening to a song is more important than audio OCD in getting the right system.  Larger living spaces are harder to come by for young people, so spaces are smaller to have a system.  And lastly, more competition for the hard earned money. 

I think audiophiles will always be around, but the average age is certainly getting higher.  Maybe, just maybe there will be a resurgence in audio when some youtubers go viral over vintage/high end audio!

Hi Everyone: I’m new to the board and just writing to introduce myself. I’m from Sacramento and have an obsession with squeezing the best performance out of my speaker setup. I recently picked up a set of Mozart Grand Acoustics, along with a matching center and VA Waltz surrounds. (My previous speakers were Monitor Audio RS Silver 6s with a matched RSLCR, which have been hard to top as a budget audiophile system.)

I would also consider a used Martin Logan 800x subwoofer.  Or a used Rythmik L12 servo sub but be aware, Rythmik subs are very musical but do not give you that thump in your chest like other subs unless you jump up to an 18".

Here is a ML 800x for sale used from TMR.   I have bought a few things from them and they are very reliable.  I own the precursor to the 800, the Orignal 10" Martin Logan Dynamo, then came the 700.  They are sealed and musical.

The Logan is a sealed sub which is better for music.  I ran 2 Logans with my Magnepans.

I think these kind of people are not audiophiles, they should be music lovers, what also are nice.

The problem here is that the audio hobby rival, the video or TV hobby demand only a TV set, what can be so low as $300usd to a great image 32'' TV, ready to use, no break-in need.

Normal people as wifes, with normal mental judgment, don't want pay $500 for a power cord, since until 1989/90 all audio equipment came from factory with its own power cord installed for free, or yet thousand dollars just for interconnect cables.

The greed of manufacturers killed the audio hobby IMO
This hobby hasn't completely died out yet because of Chinese products with high added value and low prices.
TV hobby will outlast the audio hobby.
