Good question. I picked these up at Salk HQ, in their boxes. When I got them home and opened them up, I was surprised they didn't have the white drivers shown on their web site. If this is now the norm, not sure why their site wasn't updated.
I do think they look a lot better with the black drivers, but was curious what was up, so I emailed Salk. This is the response from Jim Salk:
"Same motor. Same cone material but no thin ceramic coating. The ceramic coating was so thin, I doubt it did anything but was mainly a marketing tool.
Had we been aware of the black drivers when designing the speakers, we likely would have used them instead. Functionally, they are the same and perform the same.
If you'd ever want to switch to white, we can accommodate that. But you wouldn't likely hear any difference."
