NHT VT-2 Speakers - Anyone have any experience??
« on: 24 Mar 2005, 03:23 pm »
So there is a guy locally selling a pair that look to be in mint condition...I would be using them for 2 channel and as the front channels for home theater.  A couple of questions though...everything I read on them says they are power hungry...I am running a Sony 3000ES which is rated at 150W per...will that be enough to drive these?  Also, I am assuming I wont get full benefit from these speakers unless I Bi-Amp them...fair statement?

Appreciate any thoughts/input!

I had a chance to pick up a demo set of these, at an attractive price, about a year ago or so, off a local dealer.

I heard them fed by a Marantz surround receiver, both for 2 channel, and for HT.  Rated power was in the 125 wpc range, as I recall.  I also heard them run by a Pioneer Elite 7.1 receiver, but forget the power rating on that one.

For me, I found them great for HT (dynamic as all get out, detailed, and punchy), but for 2 channel, I was less enthused.  I thought that the treble was a little sharp, and they failed to enamour me with their ability to form a 3D soundstage.  In NO way did they lack power and were able to drive satisfactory sound levels, and beyond, with the power I heard them with.

Now, much of that could have been the room, so don't write them off on my account...

Worth a listen, if you can get to them or better still, get them to you!

What % of your listening is 2 channel vs HT?

thanks for the info...most of my listening, probably 60% is 2 channel.  In addition, a majority of my listening is based on live PA recordings taht I have made.

From what I have read online, your treble comment is consistent...some would describe them as harsh to a degree.  Did you biwire them by any chance?

I am going to try to give them a listen early next week.

Thanks for the input!

I tend more to 90% 2 channel, so their perceived benefits for HT did less for me, since it is less a priority for me.

Not sure if you will NEED to biamp them to get the best out of them, but it might help.  I did not have the chance to biamp or biwire them, as I was at the dealer's, and did not want to make him dance around for hours, and still not get the deal - as a professional salesperson, I tend to have more respect for the time of other salesfolks, as a courtesy... Had I been really jazzed by them, I would have pushed to hear them at my place with a deposit etc.

In any case, since you will be able to hear them at home, you should have the ultimate ability to discern if they are for you or not.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
