For temporary stands can't beat stacked cinder blocks with 2x8 spacers if the thought of vibrations get to you or you "need" to tweak the stand height. It's cheap, heavy, and stable.
For nicer stands build wooden plinths with wide bases and removable tops. I ordered such from TimberNation with black satin lacquer bases/tops for large monitors, looked stunning, reasonably priced, and held 50 pounds of play sand each.
