i am thinking about making mine without a frame. what would be best for the backing, peg board or thin plywood or some other material?

You can use whatever for a backing board, I just would try to keep the weight down.
Also using no frame will absorb reflected sounds better, how much more I have no idea.

Looking at a non-frame panel, I personally didn’t like the looks of the burlap loose on the rigid fiberglass, I was thinking
of laying down some adhesive on the rigid FG and putting the burlap right on it smoothing out the wrinkles before it dried.

sticking adhesive to FG for burlap is a good idea. Or you can put L bracket at for side of frame which hold FG in place.

I found rigid fiberglass (Amstrong) yesterday at Homedepot. It's only 1/2" , but you can put several pieces together and price is only 42 cents/piece. It's much much cheaper than 703 RFG.

Another option i can think of is to get two pieces of acoustic ceiling tile (Amstrong) at HD and stick them together with nail liquid, put them on the light frame of 1"x2'x4' and cover it with burlap. THis way, burlap is nice and smooth, no buble .

I have several bundles of Ownes Mansfield 814 in 2" foil faced for a project. I bought WAY too much. If you are having problems finding material this is 3.0 lb/ft^3 so it's equivilent to OC703.

I can sell you bundles of six 2'x4' panels for $72 per box. There is 48 ft^2 per box and you just double these up if you need thicker 4" panels.

Shipping UPS isn't a problem in terms of weight but they will be oversized.

Since you're planning to make four more, I suggest you make them four inches thick instead of only two. That will work much better for bass traps. The panels you already made are fine for general mid/high ambience control and for treating the first reflection points.

Sorry for the dumb question...but I take this to mean you'd want 2" thick panels at first reflection points; so where would you locate the 4" bass trap panels? In the corners, I assume?
