NX studio home theater build possible?
« on: 6 Aug 2021, 06:54 pm »
Hi all,

I'm dying to see what Danny's OB speakers are all about but here's the challenge: the space I'm working with is a 10x14ft corner of a 20x20 open concept living room/dining room area.

I was originally thinking NX Studio's with OB subs but I don't have 3ft clearance needed from the wall to use the OB subs as recommended.

Is my dream of making this combo work impossible given that space restriction? Any thoughts on if this could work?

Thank you

You want an open baffle speaker but you don’t have room to pull them away from the walls?  You have a massive room but are limited to a corner of it.  That sounds frustrating.  Maybe consider X-MTM or if you really want a taste of OB, X-Statiks.

The NX-Studios were designed to be able to go near the front wall. You probably can’t do OB subs, but the Studios with sealed subs are still really good. You still get a lot of the OB spatial cues from the studios.

Can confirm - this is my setup. When I listen to 2-channel music, I pull the studios away from the wall and put them back when finished. When it's screen time, I usually keep them close to the walls out of laziness and they still sound spacious and airy. As for subs - mine are currently nothing special but I don't feel like I'm missing anything when watching a movie - they simply do the job of reinforcing the bottom end for the Studios.

Alright, if ob subs are out of the question (which really makes me sad since the concept of extra detailed bass was exciting), any suggestions for next closest option? Rythmik F12G that has Danny's paper driver?

Thanks again for your inputs

Yes, is you can't do OB subs, then the sealed servo subs are your next best option.  And those subs are hardly 'slumming it'.  They handily beat most other subs out there in detail and musicality.  Even if they aren't quite on the OB servo sub level.

I'd do 3 of them, dispersed around the room in a swarm configuration.

Beerbellydad,

What's your impression of the NX Monitors for HT btw?

I love them.

I went from a Klipsch setup to X-Omnis as mains with X-Voce center. Now I use the Studios as mains and Omnis as surround. Moving to the Omnis and Voce, the airiness improved immensely but going over to the Studios, all of the spatial audio cues really came out - even center drivers not matching the mains. The whole system really came alive and is so far improved from the sound-from-boxes setup of the Klipsches. Many thumbs up, for sure!
