Those were interesting and exciting times. First TVs. First transistor radios we could carry around with us. That is how I got addicted to audio. Now a larger TV is pretty much "meh".

Indeed they were.

We lived in cottage country and cottages were usually the repository of both vacuum tube TVs and radios that had served their purpose in the family home. In the early 1970s, many of these old TVs and radios overstayed their welcome at the cottage and were eventually delegated to our local dump ("landfill" in today's terms). As a young teen at the time, I was fascinated by shortwave listening (SWL) and fondly remember rescuing many of these vacuum tube radios from the dump. The radios came with a standard broadcast band and a few international broadcast, shortwave bands.

It was truly a magical time, the world had come to my room every night via an outside copper wire strung between my window and the old, apple tree and a handful of glowing vacuum tubes.

I remember my dad on the roof, moving the antenna around, and we would be yelling up the chimney to tell him when to stop.

This all reminds me of this other TV remote that was 1970’s cool tech.  Kinda like having a car of an era that needed constant attention, a legacy of tech of the day was a better understanding of how and why stuff worked that left a warm glow.  Tech today is ridiculously capable but cold and sterile in comparison.
Of course nostalgia, being what it is, conveniently forgets the daily frustrations.

@Laundrew: Re: your Larsen scientists with the lunchbag and missile cartoon. I picked up a coffee mug with this cartoon on a trip to San Francisco back in 1981. I still have the mug (which is still in great shape) and whenever I have my morning coffee in it, I have to chuckle. The man was a cartoon genius with so many great cartoons. Right up there with Don Martin!  :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Thanks for posting.

Could not agree more with respect to the genius of Gary Larson :thumb: Now that you mention it, it's time I purchased a Larson mug :thumb:

Remember those days? Burgers, fries, and sodas were all 15 cents. My college did not have many dining options so McD's was my standard lunch. I really could not afford any other place. I was so poor I never had a Coke for lunch because that meant I could afford a burger the next day.  :(

    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.
