I spent much of my career teaching is a smaller community high school. It was about the mid nineties that I removed the pencil sharpeners from my room. Whenever a student would come to the desk looking for a pencil sharpener, I'd take my pocket knife out and hand to him/her (the girls would often have a puzzled look). Understand, in that time, nearly all my male students carried pocket knives as well, and in all my years I never saw one used inappropriately.
