Bad bass on X-Ls encores

Bass sounds boomy on newly built pair. Just 2 hours on them. more breakin needed?
Not happy so far.

You should measure their response and make sure you're getting proper FR response.

Plus 1.

Unless you have a well treated room, boomy bass sounds like room interaction. Could also be placement.

Usually they are lacking in bass until they have about 24 hours on them.

Are they placed against the wall?
Try stuffing the ports with a pair of socks, it might help if there is too much room interaction.

Or if you want to speed up the burn-in process, you can place them on the ground, facing one another, connect one of them out of phase and cover them with some pillows and blankets. Then play some music or "brown noise"' on a loop for a day or two, just loud enough to not be annoying or a distraction.

I did this with mine for a few days before really listening to them.

Hope it helps!

I agree that break in is needed, but I have also found the XCLS Encore to be a bit boomy unless pulled well from the wall, at least in my system.  Stuffing the ports with socks gave a taught, leaner optimum sealed alignment sound that was balanced near the wall.

The speaker are 5’ from thee front wall and 3’ from the side walls. Same location as my LSA 1 signatures were placed. They done have that bass problem.

Try Hobbs’s suggestion of putting a sock in each port. It might work.

Tried the sock in each port. Didn’t help. Not happy with these speakers.

Hmmm...

Out of curiosity, do you have a a subwoofer connected to your system? Cuz its really perplexed that you're getting boomy bass from the X-LS, esp when your speakers are 5' from the front wall..

If you do have a Sub, it may be playing up too high for the XLS, and adjusting the crossover down lower may help, or adjusting the phase if your sub allows for it. (If its just a 0/180 switch, flip it to the opposite setting, if it sounds like the bass totally vanished, the sub is playing up too high)

Does the boominess change if you move around the room?
What are the basic dimensions of your room?

Does your system have a "bass boost" or EQ feature? Have you tried adjusting those?

Just out of curiosity, did you find the Tekton Lores boomy also?

I looked into your past posts and discovered you're an OB guy (nothing wrong with this). Do the X-LS Encores sound boomy because you're comparing their bass to OB bass?

Well, it appears my bass problem had to do with break in. Just turned on my system playing Ray Brown’s Super Bass cd. Sounds great now. Took about 20 hours.

Thanks to all for your input and suggestions.

Long shot but you may also want to be sure you didn't make an error wiring the crossovers. Easily done.

I also have Lores. I would not consider them boomy. If you found the Lores also boomy, that would make me believe it's more a transfer function within the room. In fact, with a floor standing enclosure, the Lores should have more bass extension and more likely to exacerbate a room problem.

I am a day away from getting my XLS build done. I intend to use the Lores as a yardstick to the XLS performance. I like the Lores a lot so I'm hoping the XLS will be at least as good. But the Lores do benefit from a full sized enclosure and a very nice tweeter element, so not exactly apples-apples.

Im glad you got it sorted!  :thumb:
Strange that your bass was boomy to start, when most start on the weak side.

And it should only get better from here!

Having built a few pairs of these, I've found the drivers keep improving up to around 50 hours. With upgraded crossover components give them at least 100 hours. You can point them at each other about 6"-12" apart, throw a blanket over them and let them play 24 hours a day.

I start off soft for a couple hours then vary the volume over time

Something I left out of my previous post is if you face the speakers toward each other, flip the speaker wires on one so they are out of phase
