Forget about the critics, Monster Hunter is great! Although I may be a little biased because Milla Jovovich is in the starring role.

As seen in the preview, a patrol of U.S. Army Rangers are transported to a new world where monsters rule, their only goal is to survive. The monsters are practically indestructible, fast and relentless. Get ready for action!
Milla plays Lt. Artemis, the leader of the small group of Rangers, Tony Jaa is The Hunter. The two team up to survive a deadly journey across the desert. I do not play video games and was unfamiliar with the Monster Hunter franchise which started in 1994. I thought the screenplay was enjoyable in a mindless way, hey - we're fighting monsters here not watching an August Wilson screenplay, just the opposite in fact, dialog is minimal which focuses our attention on the characters and how they interact.

The fight and battle scenes have excellent choreography. Tony Jaa is one of Thailand's biggest stars and a martial arts expert. Milla Jovovich does action very well, her ferocity and screen presence matches Sigourney Weaver in the Alien films. Milla's screen credits include "The Fifth Element", the underrated "Ultraviolet", and Alice in the "Resident Evil" franchise. Ron Perlman weilds the biggest axe against bigger monsters and everyone is having a good time.

Monster Hunter is directed by Paul W.S. Anderson who is remaking violent video games into movies including Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil and Monster Hunter. Paul also directed "Shopping", "Alien vs. Predator", "The Three Musketeers" and "Event Horizon" which starred Laurence Fishburne and Sam Neill. Paul is also married to Milla Jovovich.

The set design and computer graphics are all first class. The vast landscape and monsters have a lot of detail and is crystal clear, the film will look great on your big screen. Dialog and sound is clear too, the production companies did not skimp on quality.

Based on the ending I'll bet there is a sequel in the works.

Thanks for the heads-up, WGH.  I'm a huge Jovovich fan.  Sometimes mindless monster action is what the heart desires.... :tempted:
