Le Noise by Neil Young.
There's just something about that whole album that's a gut punch
from the instruments, Neil's singing and the words.
Next would be all of ELP. Even their soft stuff has an edge.

Moby Dick, from the album Song Remains the Same & Jimi Hendrix- Let Me Stand Next to Your Fire. The snare drum in this is hard hitting sounding like a real snare drum when cranked.

"Frank's Theme" and "Little Boy Blue" recorded by Holly Cole. You'll know pretty quickly if your system can handle SLAM. Hint: If it sounds like a wild bloated mess then it can't.

Slam as a measurement is meaningless. What is the dynamic range of the pieces mentioned? ELP and Rush - all limited and compressed. The others, more than likely they are too. Try the Sheffield Firebird, or the early Telarcs (maybe later Telarcs too, I don't have as much experience with them.)

Thanks for this rec! I listened to it for the first time last night and I'd put it up there with After the Gold Rush as my favorite Neil Young album.

If you think it's on par with After the Gold Rush, I'll have to give it another try. I admit the first (and last) time I heard it, I wasn't able to focus on it, and when heard just as background, it's a bit annoying.

It's not a recording with slam, IMO, but it is very heavy. Very much electric guitar distortion driven and not so much drum driven. I've been working my way though his discography and was hoping to find a 'heavier' album that was good.

Weird thing about NY "Le Noise" is there is no drum on the album.
That's the thing about it, it's got all this whatever you want to call it
without drums. I can't say it's one of my favorite NY but man does it
grab your attention. And the songs are just so damn wrenching.

Gave it a 2nd listen tonight and man it's great. It has this whole "guy with a guitar" vibe, but the guitar is plugged in and massive sounding. And his voice is just how I like it - bitter, heartfelt, resigned, wise.

Neil Young "Le Noise". Apply named. Ridiculous reverb, gain and looping. Seems like he wrote "Love and War" and then needed some filler songs.
