Do all of the X-Encores have a similar sound

Hi Everyone,

First I would like to say this is a great forum.

Last year I upgraded by solid state power and preamp and ever since than I been thinking about upgrading my speakers.  My speakers are JBL L36’s, which I really like the tone of them. But with our cluttered living room and the size of them (@ 3 X-LS boxes each) I have them about 6’ off the ground on top of bookshelves.  Not the ideal sound location.  And since they are 40lbs each not easy to pull down for listening and then put them back up for storage.

Based on everything I have read and listened to I feel one of GR Researches X –Encore speakers would be right for what I am looking for.  My one concern is will I like the tone of the Encores?

So I am looking for some impressions / thoughts from anyone who has heard the X-LS, X-SLS and X-MTM with the basic crossover and ones with each of the different levels of upgrades.  What I am curious to know is since they all use the same woofer and tweeter is the sound tone / sound characteristics the same in each model?

What I am thinking is if all the speaker models have the same sound I would build the base X-LS model I will know if I like the sound of the Encore speaker with a minimum amount of money spent.  And if I do like them I have many options to upgrade to get the best possible sound.

And a bonus for me would be hearing from anyone who has listened to both the Encores and the JBL L36’s and how they compare to each other.

Thanks, Danny

All of those X Series models have the same tonal balance and character. So they all match really well.

Dual woofer models increase sensitivity, and power handling. They also have an advantage of faster settling times for a given SPL level due to reduced cone movement.

And open baffle models like the X-Statik or X-Voce take things up a notch in openness and transparency.

Upgrades across the board are big improvements in all models and are consistent across the whole line.
