Cartridge upgrade from denon 103
« on: 26 Jun 2020, 02:12 pm »
contemplating upgrade of my denon103.  Using audiomod arm on a lenco 78.  I was recommended audio technica oc9 mkii over denon 103r.  Hope to hear your views.

Thanks

For me, the initial key to the 103( or "r") is having a compatible tonearm. Then comes the proper SUT or step up. Aside from that, there's a plethora of options in regard to retipping and aftermarket alumium or wood bodies. These take things to the next level again. If you like the tone and balance of the 103r, I'd consider any or all of the above an upgrade. I honestly have no knowledge of the AT cartridge you mention, so I can't offer any help there.

Just to be clear. I would consider a retip / aftermarket body of some ilk for your 103 rather than moving to the "r" version. Especially if you currently have an SUT or step up that best matches the 103. FWIW, the "r" specs differently, especially in regard to matching a SUT.

I had a Pulse aluminum body Denon DL - 103r on my Audiomods Classic arm .While it provided me with a lot of fun a Denon DL - 301mkII gave me more. Now I took my last plunge and got me a AT ART9. My personal opinion is that AT OC9 will outperform the 103r.
Cheers, Doug

Really depends on the sound you are after.  I would throw the Ortofon Quintet in the mix as well, blue or bronze.

It really depends on what kind of sound you like/are looking for.  The DL103 has a unique sound - difficult to reproduce in other cartridges.  It's biggest limitation is the spherical stylus.  If you like the sound of the 103, you could get it re-tipped with an elliptical/fine-line stylus to great benefit.  The elliptical Denon 103D was one of the best, if not the best, cartridge I've ever owned!

if you like the stock 103 there are so many modded units out there that improve on its basically good characteristics - i have a zu - it is very nice!  ...but i must admit the high tracking forces recommended kinda spook me...

I agree ( once  again) with the recent posts. I have Zu and Midas bodies 103's that have been retipped by Steve at VAS. I use an A23 SUT that's designed/voiced around the 103.  Bottom line, I'm done. I'm exactly where I want to be for vinyl playback. Not saying this would be everyone's cup of tea, just that there's a LOT of potential with this cartridge.

I have the 103r.  It was replaced with a Hana EL.  It cost a bit more than the 103r but damn is it nice.
