Man, that looks good.

Thank you so much for the information, inspiration, and the electronics to get me going.  :D

I became a little obsessed with the idea of having a super solid base, inert for my sub so I added two thicknesses of ¾" Baltic Birch to the bottom then ran my cherry around it.  I don't know if it changed the sound but I like the way it looks and this unit is a seriously solid, heavy sub now.

Russelberg,
Your sub cabinet looks fantastic.  Nice wood working shop by the way!  About how many hours do you have in this build?

Thanks,

EJ

I didn't keep close track but I would guess around 6-8.  I had to glue the cherry on each side individually so I typically did about 2 sides per day.  The actual construction of the box does not take long and because I did not have to get the MDF to any finish state I could move quite quickly with glue and brads.

Great looking case!! I may need to borrow inspiration from your work when i build mine.

I just barely purchased mine. I have the sub it self but not the amp yet. How long did it take for you to receive it?

Mine came together as a kit from Danny so everything got to me in one box.  I live in Canada so it took a little longer but it was a very reasonable shipping time.  Danny shipped it the same day I ordered it.

Excellent job on the cabinet.  It's challenging to convince the non-believers that this quality and attention to detail is only found in cabinets at the highest end of audio and priced accordingly.  I took last week off and spent roughly 50 hours in my garage workshop on a pair of X-LS's.  Considering I live in Florida, it's mid-summer, and last week was a scorcher...  The joy these speakers will bring over the years far out weighs the lasting effects of dehydration, heat stroke, and exhaustion.  The funny part is...  I'm only a little bit joking and my wife was non too happy that I can't seem to harness that enthusiasm when it comes to cutting the grass in September.

Eyy another Floridian! I feel ya on the weather, ive been waiting 3-4 days now for a day where its not 110% humidity so i can work on getting my NX-studios veneer ready..
I love my X-LSs, & I know you will too!  :thumb:

Hah! We all know that the reason there's no passion in cutting grass is that we know it'll need to be cut again next weekend. :P
There's no joy in it until the cooler weather finally rolls in around December..

It just occurred to me. This sub does not get sheets of no rez? Is it because it's a closed sub?

If you read the description of the servo sub kit #2, one sheet of no-rez will do!  Here is a quote from Danny’s website!

“Lining the cabinet walls with No Rez really helps minimize cabinet resonances and provides a cleaner and smoother sound. A sealed box cabinet will require 1 sheet. “

I got the sub (amp did not arrive with subwoofer, I am hoping it will arrive sometime this week) I did not get a sheet of no rez.

It’s not included in kit, you order separately!   Call Danny and see if you can get one sheet shipped with your plate amp.

This is the start of my tongue in cheek servo sub build with the GR SW-12-4  AND A370PEQ.

I had this old sub cabinet in the garage, and since the equipment from GR arrived yesterday, I figured to move on with this cabinet and see if there is a chance of success. Don't worry, more photos to follow. Been doing a lot of hogging out the old round hole in the cabinet and square it up for the plate amp. When I get my strength back, I'll take a shot of the progress. Man, I made this cabinet thick and heavy.!!

A little bit of an update. Routing out the round hole to make it square (for the amp to be mounted) was not very easy. Even though I mostly own good equipment to it, there was a lot to be done. In this photo, things are still in a rough stage, but I may advance this sub into the listening space before I do much more, just to make sure it isn't a waste time. If so, then I will start the build of the recommended cabinet. Time is important here where I live when it comes to working in a shop that can  be a challenge to heat.

Still a long way to go with finishing, but at least before I get too much further, I know that it is time to at least the unit and make a basic decision. Is this cabinet going to be right or not? If not, time to scrap that idea and start building from scratch. Anyway, everything fits well, and that is a relief in and of itself.

  More to come.

I will a note here. The test went very well indeed. I need to to check the seal of both the driver and amp. Then the top will be put on and definitely a refinish job for the cabinet.
Listening to Fleetwood Mac's Mystery to me was the one recording that I used for today. The servo unit was easily able to produce the deep bass in the way I wanted, i.e. with force, yet musically! I forgot how much I like this design for bass. Almost as much as I like folded bass horns.

Did you add any bracing to the box?
