Kit/Design Recommedation for a GR Research Newb
« on: 30 Apr 2020, 02:22 pm »
I am looking to upgrade my speakers, current B&W CDM Monitors.  System is Tidal->Allo Digi-One streamer -> ODAC -> NAD C316BEE.  Room is 24 by 12.  One end is open to multiple other rooms.  Open baffle will not work well since I do not have room to pull them out far from wall, and room is not set up well for a subwoofer.  Wife acceptance factor is limited to floor standers or big stand mount.

I just found GR Research this week via a recommended link via YouTube.  I watched all of Tuesday Tech Talk videos and was very impressed.

Looking for a 3 way or 2 way MTM design.  I see the A/V3 but was wondering if there are 3 way designs or 2/2.5 way MTM designs based on the M-165 woofers.

Please let me know your thoughts on A/V3 vs X Series XLS or other GR Research designs.

Thanks,

Scott E Anderson

My first recommendation are the CST-1s Danny has. These are complete speakers that need some minor internal work. They will be great. If you want to make them exceptional, upgrade the crossover while you are fixing the damping/insulation and speaker connection issues. These were based off Danny's N3 kit, which I have in my living room system. He just posted a video on the CST-1s yesterday or the day before. The CST-1/N3 is designed to be -3dB @ 40Hz. With room gain they play deeper. My N3s play down to 28Hz with room gain.

If you want to do a kit build I would recommend the X-MTM Encore. These are floor standing versions of the X-CS Encore center channel speaker. The X-MTM Encore is also designed to be -3dB @ 40Hz. I don't know how low they will go with room gain. Also, room gain is room and placement dependent.

Mike,

Thanks for the response.  The CST-1 fail the wife acceptance factor.  She really wants a wood finish to match our media console and side tables in the room.  I don't see the X-MTM Encore or X-CS designs are kits on the website even when I look at the archived models.

Are these published designs with crossovers designed by Danny?  If yes, please point me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Scott

Scott,

They are not on the website yet. The closest one is the X-CS Classic. The Encore is an upgraded version of the classic. Either version can be built as a sealed center channel oe as ported floorstanders. There are some build threads in Danny’s circle. Check out the sticky (orange section at top of page) for the build thread.

Just to fill in what mike said in a different way....yes, the x-mtm and x-cs are designs by danny and sold as kits. Although they are not on the website, they may be ordered by phone. Cheers!
