It's time to upgrade my Denon DVD2900. I'm looking for a CD/SACD player with more dynamic, cleaner, more open wide soundstage depth and less midiocre bass. Is there such a thing existed for less than 1K?

Anyway, I appreciate if  you could please share your opinion on your current source.

Thanks in advance,
F-100

I am using a Denon 2900, but it has been modded by Dan Wright with the Universal Truth tube mods.  It is currently back at his shop getting further ps upgrades.  Since you already have the unit why don't you consider having either Alex at APL or Dan do the upgrades?

I never heard the stock unit, though I have a 2800 to compare.  The ModWright unit is way better than the stock 2800 in all the areas you want to improve.  It really excels in it's open and deep soundstage.  Also, there is a 3D quality present that is very tube like without the flabby bass often associated with tubes.

I probably will do that but just want to see what the others are using out there. :)

I am running a Sony DVP-NC555ES for Transport and SACD that i have modded... I will probably be adding an LClock to it as Budget permits. From that i have it plugged into a Lite Audio DAC60 from HK, that I have also modded. The combination sounds really good to me for redbook and SACD is also not too shabby.

I'm using a modded Denon 2900 and flabby bass is one term I would not use to describe the sound. It has some of the tighest and deepest bass of any digital source I've ever used. My unit was originally on of the Parts Connexion mods offered by Underwood Hi-Fi. I did some additional work on it and have been very happy with the results.

EA modded Sony 7700 transport (as good as everyone says it is!) and a Scott Nixon Tubedac (Yup, as good as everyone says it is too!)

In your position, modding might be ideal rather than spending potentially more for another unit with compromises.

a tube cdp that sings
of coarse its probably the cheapest cdp mentioned here.
but it does so much right with the tempest and mono's i'm not sure if and when i will try a more expensive unit.if anything i would do a mod of some kind.

it has bass up the wazoo, silky mids and a top end so smooth you would think its rabbit fur
no sacd

I currently use:

Agile PACE CD + Agile STEP DAC (with masterclock I2S)

Philips DVD (cheap, for some DVD based recordings)

ONIX XCD-88 (testing)

----------------------------

I have had as source:

Denon DCM-370 (little tweaked)
Philips DVD + CI Audio DAC
 SONY SXCD-670 (SACD)
 Panasonic DVD-A
 harman kardon hd 7600 II

The source I like more is the Agile Pace+Step, but also the Denon DCM-370 after minimal modifications and CI Audio DAC were very nice... SACD and DVD-A players for CD didn't worked well, not as well at least.... I am just about to test the Onix XCD-88.

And maybe this year I will get a SYmphonic Line Klareheit spieler, if everything goes fine.

Well, no, I do not know when I could get this player I have to save some money and...

It will be interesting to evaluate it side by side with my current source...

I hope it will be soon...

Jolida JD-100 cdp w: JHS Gold Label Sylvania 5751WA triple mica black plates, Chris VenHaus cryoed Flavor 1 PC, Herbie's Hal-O 9 tube dampers, all resting on a 22 lb. granite slab supported by Vibrapods. Also has a 12 lb. piece of marble on the top resting on coasters. Tube pins, IEC, PC male plugs, RCAs, and ICs all treated with Walker SST.

I don't pretend this is the very best cdp money can buy. However, it is sooo musical, with my system's components, that I have had no upgrade urge for the 1+ years I've had it.

Best of luck with your decision making.

Hi djbnh that's an interesting highly tuned source, the Jolida is also a nice unit but I have never had the chance to try it  :?

Have you used the Herbie's CD stabilizers ?

They work fine...

Hi Eduardo, and thanks for your nice comments. I use the Herbie's CD Grungebuster mat, not sure if that's the same thing as the stabilizers you mention.

Peace.

Oh yeah djbnh, the Grungebuster, sorry I forgot the name...

Incredibly that humble piece of "plastic" made my CD (even with CDM 12 mechanism) sound smoother and more relaxed...

Another interesting thing to use is claners treatments (I have been playing too much trying to improve CD sound) well the LAST is a nice product, even one PC game a WWII fligh simulator ran incredible fast and many details were then present.

With music it does an incredible work also, and the prefered for many of my customers are the Audiotop cleaners/treatments from Switzerland 3 guys out of three agree the treatment do improve the CD sound...

Hi

I am using a AH! Njoe Tjoeb CD-4000 standard as my source. I have change the tube's to Sovtek which I think helped a lot.

My favorit CD-player at the moment is Rega Jupiter. IMO this is the one of the best, no matter the price. Some of the more expensive players are better in specifik areas, but overall the musicality off the Rega is suberp. The sound can only be described as  "Vinyl-like", analog etc you know what i mean

Ed. Looking forward to hearing more about the SL-Klarheit.

We are now using the Benchmark DAC1. I am speechless... just speechless good. It's as close one can get to the real thing and at a crazy... crazy real world price...
