So, in a moment of weakness, I took the link to update the firmware to whatever the latest version is, as of noon PDT, Mar 8, 2020.  After letting it run for well over an hour and then rebooting the BDP-pi (I thought I identified the player earlier), it STILL shows v.2.36, and it STILL says there's an update available, and it STILL can't find that ####### database!

Hi

OK please get the unit back to us and we will sort this out for you - I assume you cannot put it in service mode?

Mr. Dayton had this BDP-pi about a year ago, and he gave it a clean bill of health.

Why wouldn't I be able to use service mode?

HI

If you can put it in service mode and send us the number Chris can remotely have a look and help.

Well, one thing I've learned is that the firmware updating process just flat out does not work.  I've run it three times, with no effect.  I won't run it any more, because I know I'm flirting with a chance that it'll lock up for good.

The service is functioning, I tested it last night shortly after seeing your earlier post.  If you place your unit into service mode and post/email us the service id as James suggested we can take a look remotely to see why its occurring and possibly correct the issue.

What email do I use?

Page 24 of the Manic Moose manual describes placing a BDP into service mode and provides my email.

Thank you.  My BDP-pi came with a hardware manual, but it didn't come with a manual for the firmware.

Update: Unincognito used service mode to identify my problem with MM and the BDP-pi as due to a faulty micro-SD card.

Years ago, i had a corrupted USB flash drive so it happens.

Let me give a final update.

After all my whining about the dysfunction of ManicMoose, unincognito was able to diagnose the problem with MM as installed in my BDP-pi as being caused by a bad micro-SD card.  He did this with the BDP-pi in service mode, which is slick beyond belief!  I must point out that this same micro-SD card had previously been given a clean bill of health by Bryston's US rep while he had my BDP-pi in his hands.  I don't know what to make of that

In any event, unincognito directed Bryston's staff to send me a new micro-SD card, which I assume will have a current version of MM actually installed (I haven't received it yet).  In the meantime I bought a 16GB Sandisk micro-SD card at BB.  I was able to flash it with the latest firmware, v.2.42.  It has worked perfectly.  MM 2.42 still has some quirks that are unresolved since at least as far back as 2.36, but it works without crashing.

My thanks go to unincognito for helping me with this.

Flash memory can fail after it has been working just fine, just like traditional spinning hard disks, although a typical expectation for modern flash memory is well past your lifetime. But it can still happen.

It is also possible for defective RAM to eventually cause filesystem corruption, when the defect is hit. But until the defect is hit, everything would work fine.

Glad to hear it's resolved. I had similar issues with my PI a while back and Chris did a remote diagnosis and the same fix. It's been stable now with no issues, I am happy to report. More great Bryston service!

I'll try to get that replacement card out to you as soon as we reopen after the pandemic and see about getting it out earlier.

Stay healthy,
