Speaker Grille/Cloth

Does anyone know the purpose of this? Does it improve sound quality?

Grille cloth is designed to keep children's fingers from messing with expensive speaker drivers and possibly damaging them. Speaker grilles can be modified to prevent children from using computer keyboards as well.

Read just about any speaker review and it will mention that the speaker sounded better with the grill removed.
