Modwright PH 9.0 Tube rolling thread
« on: 19 Sep 2018, 01:34 pm »
I thought I would start a thread to see what others have tried.  I have had mine for a week now and did try some Amperex orange globe tubes but did not think they improved on the stock tubes.

The other set of tubes I did find someone that has nos Russian made ones but not sure if this type of tube has much of a sound charestic that can be improved on.

Thoughts....

Hi,

I have NOS GE/Mullard 6ES8/ECC189 tubes in my PH 9.0.  I like them a lot.  So much so, in fact, that I haven’t been tempted to roll beyond them.

I'm using Amperex 7308's in mine and love them. I haven't tried the stock tubes.

Looking for additional suggestions for 6922 or equivalent substitutes. Dan, are Russian 6N5P tubes compatible? I have some 1970's NOS 6NP5's in my preamp and they sound very good and balanced.

Try the Amperex 6922, USN, white label with gold pins.
Quite vivid but balanced.
Use them in my Modwright modded Pioneer CD Player.

Hello,

I'm curious about this thread also. I have a new PH 9.0 and am enjoying it.

I've listened for a little while with the supplied tubes. They two 6922 variants are 6H23's, but I'm not sure of the brand.

I've swapped in some Orange Globe Amperex 6DJ8s from the late 60's from Herleen. I felt they did make an improvement.

I've been considering trying others, but I only have the Orange Globe's in my collection, so if anyone has positive experiences with other brands in the 9.0 I'm interested in hearing about it.

Best,

David

I'm using a match pair of Amperex SQ gold pin 6922's. Love the sound.

Same here. I think they are definite improvement. I went for cryo option and use them in my MW 225i with similar improvement in sound. Smoother, quieter and not harsh.

Are you talking about the Gold Lions? Where did you get cryoed ones?
