where to buy fuses?
« on: 4 Jan 2005, 02:12 pm »
Ok, dumb question here.  I recently blew a fuse in my Sony S7700.  It is a 2A/125V 5mmx20mm fast-blow fuse.  When I went to my local hardware store to get a replacement, they looked at me cross-eyed like "where the heck did you get this fuse??" (and they are normally very good).  I have checked a bunch of online sources (eg. partsexpress.com, acehardware.com, etc)....and no one seems to have this particular fuse.

Anyone know a good place to get these things?

Radio Shack has the 250 volt version. Ignorance on my part whether or not the extra voltage makes any difference Vs your stock 125v fuse...

2A at 250V is equivalent to 4A at 125V. So I'm not sure you'd want to put a 2A 250V fuse in. Maybe a 1A 250V...

I get all my fuses at rat shack.  But I have to say I hate going in that place.  They insist on trying to sell me a cell phone everytime.

Most likely the Sony S7700 has a fuse that was based on metric system.  Radio Shack would not have some thing like that.  What you need to do is to call local electrical store around your area and read  the marking on the fuse to them so they can check whether or not they have some thing like that in their stock.

Thanks for all the responses.  I've followed up on a few of the suggestions, and you won't believe how hard it is to find this particular combination of 2A and 125v...so far, haven't been able to find it.

(luckily I had a spare stock S7700 and took the fuse out of that one so my EA S7700 is back in service!)

FWIW:  The local electronics repair guy told me that I could use a 250V fuse in place of a 125V fuse at the same amperage rating and all would be fine.  I did so in an amp and have no problems to date.

Also, he warned that the opposite could not be done (using a 125V to replace a 250V).  His opinion was that a different voltage rating would be okay as long as it exceeded the original fuse voltage rating.

I'm not sure if this information is correct, but he convinced me at the time... :|

Is there a reason you do not want to get the same voltage fuse?

I am not a certified electrician but if we do a simple math here...a fuse rated at 125V 3amps and was presented by a surge of 240v 3amps.  Should the fuse blow to protect the circuit?  Hmmm....

Phil,

I got a great place to source fuses.  I'll check today and see if I can get you that value.  It is local.
