Mine came with an inner, sealed box that looks plain from the top but does say "Sharp". Maybe you got Christine's unit when she found it came without speakers. Just test it thoroughly for basic functions and with sweep tones...if it's functional you can still probably sell it for a profit two years from now. ; )

Mine also came with an original Sharp box inside of a larger box. The inner original box was wrapped in a less than adequate amount of bubble wrap. Also, the original inner box has a nice dent in the side that looks about the width of a towmotor fork blade.

Vinnie did mention something about the Low end being limited on the stock 111 so that might have something to do with the low end response.  .

Hi Dave,

Yes, I found the stock Sharp SD-EX111 to roll off the deep base (they use one pair of undersized caps in the signal path, which is the main culprit).  I also found the bass to be a little bit slow and muddy.  Rest assured that the mods I do to this player correct all of this...

Sincerely,

KT

Tyee,

My first EX-111 came doubled boxed - the original Sharp box inside an Overstock box with airbags as padding. Everything was brand spanking new.

My second one came packed the same way but the Sharp box was beat to hell and had about four layers of clear packing tape sealing up the top (not all put on at the same time, by the way). The cast paper supports/padding that protected the amp inside the Sharp box was soft and all beaten up, and the amp was clearly used - it had crud built up in the crevices, a burnished/used looking finish, fingerprints on the display, and someone had clearly started to peel off one of the stickers. The antennae wires were loose and all over the place, the remote had the batteries already installed, and the bag that held everything was ripped and tied in a knot at the top. In addition, the warranty card looked like it had been dunked in water and then dried out.

I looked on Overstock's policy page and unless the item specifically states that it's factory refurbished or customer returned, the item you receive should be brand new. I called them and they immediately emailed me an RMA return label. UPS picked it up and I received a brand new unit about a week later.

Overstock took care of it right away, so I commend them on that. I wonder, though, if this just slipped through the cracks or if they were trying to pass off a used one on someone who wouldn't care?

Unfortunately, now that everything is sold out your only recourse may be a refund if you're really unhappy about it. For this price I could live with a used one, but only if there's no other choice.

Best,
KT

My second one is waiting to be picked up. It will be interesting to see how that one is packed. I'll let you know.

PS
Looks like overstock has taken the EX111 off their website. It does not exist anymore!!

Sharp SD-EX111 Mini System (Good News / Bad News)
Hey Folks.  The bad news is that it looks like the $75 deal for the Sharp maybe gone at Overstock.  The good news is it looks like this piece is still in stock over at Tweeter -

http://www.tweeter.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1441305

The bad news is that it's about $170.  Ouch!

I had gotten ones of these for my Mom from tweeter and so far she loves it.  Sounds great when I visit.

At least it's an option.

Actually, for everything we're getting: excellent sounding amp, CD player, AM/FM tuner, timer functions, and remote control, I'd argue that even $170 is a great deal. I have a 47 Labs Gaincard and a couple of excellent 300B amps (all of them amplifiers only and none of them cheap), and here I am using the Sharp as my main amp.

Still, you can't beat $75. Thanks Eric the Red!

I think we've all become spoiled with this great deal and with the incredible price/performance ratios of these new digital amps in general.

Hopefully there will be other great deals lurking around the corner.

KT

P.S. - Wasn't there that guy selling the EX-111 on Ebay for $77 plus $19 shipping? Don't know if the seller's good or not, but the price is still really good.

Someone in Audiogon is selling the same type of unit.  The loading of the CD is with a hinge that flips upward.  I think it is an older model, it might not be the same 5.6 MHZ resolution, but the lower, 2. something.  I think the resolution of the processor is key for the proper sound of digital amps.

Sharp integrateds that sell in Audiocube II at staggering prices have much higher resolution, I think at least double the one that the EX-111 has.

This is a newer version of the EX-200... which is a very good sounding little system.  I bought an EX-200 for my brother-in-law's office for Christmas and he decided it was too nice and kept it at home. :)

The big differences I spotted in the 200/220 vs. the 111 is that they use 2.8mHz sampling and come with some speakers whereas the 111 uses 5.6 and does not include speakers.

I had the older 2.8mhz unit.  The black one with MD.  It isn't nearly as good.  It is a bit better than the panny srx10.

These units came up earlier in the thread, and I don't think anyone's heard them. They have half the sampling rate of the 111. Let us know. Perhaps you've discovered the audiocircle's next Davy Crockett hat....
