Low gain with Ortofon OM 30 in my Cornet pre.
« on: 3 Jan 2005, 09:12 pm »
I had to switch my cartridges from a Dynavector 10X4 to a Ortofon Super OM 30 I had on hand, the Dyna stylus is trashed.  The output on the Ortofon is supposed to be 4 mv compared to 2.5 for the Dyna but I really have to crank up the gain on my pre to get a decent sound level.  I didn't have this problem at all with the Dyna cart.  Is there something in the Cornet I can changeI have that can help with this?  The DYna is a HO MC and the Ortofon a MM.  My Cornet is basically stock and has worked great but I would have thought I would have more gain with the Ortofon and not less.

TIA,  Brian

Hmmm, should be louder.  Did you have 47k loading for the dyna?

Jim, the Dyna is a 47k load and the Cornet values are all stock. I'm not sure where the problem lies but I was using a passive pre which worked great with the Dyna but I had to put my Dynaco PAS 3 in line for the extra gain when using the Ortofon cart.  Unfortunately the sound is not so good compared to the passive pre, which is just a selector switch and volume control, no resistors in the passive.  If you have any suggestions or any questions feel free.  I actually like the sound of the Ortofon better than the Dyna even when it was new, more dynamic and better imaging.

Of course the real answer is to buy a Clarinet

Was there not enough gain with the passive, even with volume cranked?

Jim, gain was fine and I didn't need to get close to full gain with the passive, way too loud. With the Ortofon I can go full gain and it's not as loud as before.

The Clarinet is down the road for me at this point but I do want to give that a try when I have the cash. I also want to try the amps as well, never heard SET but my amps now are upgraded Dynaco MK III's.
