Annihilation

I really enjoyed this movie as did my wife. This may take a second viewing to really understand the meanings.
Natalie Portman is amazing again, and the other female leads are well done.
This is written and directed by Alex Garland ( Ex Machina, 28 days later)
Amazing cinematography of a very trippy world inside the shimmer. It’s Sci-Fi,  a touch of horror, and much more. I read a very interesting review in Vulture magazine ( NY magazine) how the movie is really about depression, self destruction, and suicide.
It has a critics rating of 86% and a much lower fan rating of  65%.
I give it an 8.5 out of 10 stars.

Looking forward to seeing it even though the movie differs from the Southern Reach Trilogy novels, of which Annihilation is the first book. Did you get a chance to read the trilogy yet? They are really trippy too, the story's arc explains what's really happening in Area X and comes to a satisfying conclusion.

A linked story in Vulture describes the differences better than I can:

"Finish Alex Garland’s Annihilation and you’ll find yourself sitting in a dark theater quietly murmuring, “What the…?” Finish Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation, meanwhile — the science-fiction novel that serves as the source material for Garland’s film — and … well, you’ll also find yourself sitting someplace quietly murmuring, “What the…?”

Watched Annihilation on my 4k HT projector and 100 inch screen.  For something that is visually so beautiful and colorful, that film is freaking dark.
