It's doubtful Phil Spector expected his trademark sound to be interpreted this way.

For lack of anywhere that was clearly more appropriate to post than this, I figured it would be interesting to see if there's actually a school of thought that justifies this kind of arrangement. I've seen teenagers and students add speakers and amps but that usually involves very cheap gear. Clearly the speakers here have some pedigree and are not all just junk piled together, but what on earth would posses someone to do this?

Perhaps the Margarita sign is a hint in that direction.  On the other hand there does appear to be a cross like object at the other end of the room which could indicate some religious purpose.

I wondered that, but discarded the theory due to the absence of disco lighting.  On the other hand, I could imagine "The Dream of Gerontius" having some impact here, especially if there's some delay between the sets of speakers / amps.

I would guess the primary motivation behind this unique sound system is impressing potential mates, and/or hosting some serious head banging metal parties.

We must remember that the vast majority of music lovers aren't audiophiles.

I wonder how many arrangements of the speakers were attempted before settling on the one that had minimum peaks, nulls, comb filtering and diffraction?

Looks like TWO walls of sound in need of two more walls of sound, one on the left and one on right with a ceiling of sound from above. 

Certainly an interesting way to spend 10K on a home theater.

Reminds me of college days.  My roommate co-oped for Electrovoice and had access to their factory B-stock (at 2/3rds off MSRP for veneering mistakes), so our friends loaded up.  At one off campus party 3 roommates each had their speakers piled up at the end of the room, filling the wall with Altec A7 clones.  The next day found out that one of the tweeters had blown.
