Seeking Tips for NX-Otica Build
Hi folks! I am soon beginning my build with the supplied flatpack, and have been reading through the build threads to glean information. I'm hoping folks can provide experience and opinions/justification of the following queries:
1. I am a fan of wood grain, and particularly cherry. One of the builds on this site uses a white front baffle with cherry sides and looks great. Veneer on the sides seems doable, but veneer on the front baffle seems like it would be TOO HARD!!! If I am wanting to use veneer, is the sweet spot veneered sides and painted front baffle?
2. Assembly/finish order. Do you recommend full assembly before doing any finishing? I see it done both ways. Some folks tape off the daddo'd surfaces and then do all the priming and painting first. Others seem to assemble the whole thing first and then prime, paint and veneer. Which way is best?
3. Glue and Paint. Please recommend a good glue, primer and finish. For glue, I read Titebond Extend gives extra working time. For primer I've seen Zinnser Bullseye 123 and Zinsser Cover Stain White Primer. What about a white or off-white or cream finish paint for the front baffle? Flat, eggshell or ???. Is it necessary to spray on the paints or can they be brushed on?
4. Installing drivers. Just drill into the MDF and use wood screws?
5. Wiring. How do you proceed with the wiring to minimize waste so you don't run out? I think there is a good amount of information out there on crossover assembly, but if you have any specific tips, feel free (e.g. wiring to the inductors).
6. Other tips. I am happy to receive any other tips that you think may be helpful and relevant.
I will also be building two Double Trouble sub stacks and amp boxes.... I'll need to think about the best way to finish these, whether they will be at all complimentary, or just black (easier). That is to come.
I may have other questions. And will photograph and post progress once I get started. Thanks so much all, in advance. Peter_S
