Amp suggestions for Gallo Reference III
« on: 5 Dec 2004, 12:00 am »
I'm looking for an amp(<$3000US) that will match well with this speaker. The amp can be solid state or tube, I have no preference of one over the other. I've read the Reference III's like an amp with power. Has anybody tried AES sixpacs with these speakers? I have only heard  a BAT VK300X integrated with the III's. Any experiences or suggestions are welcome.

Thanks.

I've used the Monster MPA-2250.

You might check into the Butler 2250 amp. In a review on 6moons , the Reference 3's were matched with the Butler.....  http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/butler/2250.html

I was speaking with JD at Gallo a few days ago, and he mentioned that all of them use big, high power amps.  Spectron, Levinson, Halo, Plinius, etc.  Try to get an amp that has lots of juice, the Gallos sound great, even with a paltry 25 watts, but you sacrifice macrodynamics, tons of power=tons of macrodynamics.

Carver Pro ZR1600.  I have never heard a better amp for bass control.  There was a modded one on sale on Audiogon last time I looked.

This is a bit over your price range, though I think the additional expense would be well worth it.  It's the Edge G6 ($3,600 full retail).  It is a phenomenal performer with the Gallo, and if you can add the Sonic Euphoria PLC passive autoformer pre ($1,100), you will have a system competing with the "ego audio" componentry costing more than ten times as much!

Marty,

What is your take on the Sonic Euphoria's compatability with other SS ambs like the Bryston 4BSST? I am running ACI jag/LFM's and the Dodson DAC-263 camelot combo you recommended. DO you thing there might be synergy there?

Hello Eric:

I'd like to hear your system, especially with the Euphoria in it.  There should be no compatibility problems between the Bryston and the Euphoria, especially with the Dodson supplying the source voltage.

Synergy, I'd say you have a great chance at that.

Marty

PS: Nice speakers!
