I have a JL Audio 12w0v3-4 which I want to use for an OB sub. What amps are suitable for this purpose? From what I've read the amp needs a specific dampening factor to reach a desirable system Q, how do I calculate this?

Just one? How high do you need to go?
If <250hz or so, the PE Yung plate amps with 6db boost are a inexpensive turnkey option.

Agree that a plate amp for a sub would work well.

Another option would be the XLS series of amps from Crown.  All have built in crossovers that are easy to setup and use.  And TONS of power on tap should you desire it.

Many folks find that OB bass is best implemented with multiple woofers.  I have run a single 12 in the early days as an experiment, but liked a pair of 12's more.  Many end up with a quad of 15's or more.

This is just an experiment so I don't want to throw too much money on it. My first option was the inuke nu1000 non dsp version, but thought it was too much power for an OB design, but I don't really know much about OB so I thought I'd get an informed opinion.
I'm not expecting it to do 100db below 30 hz or anything crazy just need to know the maximum power I would require to get decent output with a 120hz crossover

Isn't an H frame essentially an open baffle with long sides, 'cause I've read that having long baffle sides introduces pipe resonance.

Correct...which is why I suggested it after you specified 120hz upper limit. Unless very long, the resonance will be well above that...and the plate amp has a variable low pass filer. Your electro-acoustic response will be a combination of the driver/baffle response and the electrical filter.
The "bigger" baffle (increase in separation between front/rear/observer) is what gives more output below 120hz. It simultaneously limits how high you can go, but 120hz no problem, for example a 12" or so deep H.

loosing 4db mean that with H blaffle you need more then 200w vs a 100w of flat baffle ....
