I thought the XR45 didn't give him enough power.  That is why I was wondering about the Flying Moles.

Yes, considered the Flying Moles but I agree with Starch, I want to run a digital coax from my transport and stay digital all the way until the speaker outputs. I think this is where most of the magic is happening. I have heard a Panny with Vandersteens and was totally blown away by the purity of the sound.

I am fairly convinced now that the wide opinions on these cheapo digital receivers are mostly due to varying speaker loads. Throw a current hungry, low impedance load on these and you will wonder what all the fuss is. Throw a fairly transparent, 8 ohm efficient speaker on them and WHoA, MAGIC!

All IMHO.

Read this about the XR70 over on the AVS forum. I don't understand this at all...

>>Have you turned on the 'HQ Sound Mode' ?
HQ SoundMode, increases/decreases the power supply voltage instead of digital altering the input data to reduce its value. Since in HQSound Mode the input data is never altered, the range is limited by how much the voltage power supply voltage could be varied.

I think that is how the XR45 operates normally.  Ask Wayne at Bolder though for a confirmation of that.

Wayne:
Thx for the reference to the JR's posting!

So in reality we are looking at technology which is bringing us a step back instead of forward. Nice of them to help out!L

Not quite. All the Panny receivers as far as I can tell (yes, even the 25) use a hybrid approach, where part of the volume control is done by altering the power supply voltage, and part is done by digital-domain attenuation.  It sounds like 'HQ mode' is likely just eliminating the digital-domain component.

The only XR version I've measured in detail is the 25 and it uses 12dB of power-supply voltage adjustment, with a lower limit of about 8-10V. I *believe* that the XR10 was reported to go as low as 2-3V, though, and I'm not sure about the 45 or the newer receivers.  The upshot though is that eliminating the digital domain component will introduce a 'maximal attenuation' limit, and depending on your speakers this might be too loud to be practical.
