I have been perusing diyaudio a lot more lately and came upon a thread talking of using $0.49 wide range pioneer drivers in an open baffle line array to good results. Well I couldn't resist, for only $17 ($35 shipped) I bought 36 of these buggers.
details hereI even think PE has some talk of speakers projects using these drivers on the site. Anyway, thought I'd pass that on for anyone like me who wants to mess around building speakers and would like their first attempts to be cheap.
FWIW, the info I gathered from diyaudio suggests that crossovers should be in the 3k range to avoid the harsh breakup around 7k that these drivers have. Such an OB line array that was proposed will not have any bass to speak of <100hz so augmenting with subs is necessary but it might still be fun to build for cheap and mess around.
My thoughts were to build it first and then augment with a tweeter (such as the hi-vi planar tweet) and sub later. WAF will be quite low with these monsters though.
