.... He will learn 10x as much about making a good photograph with that camera than he would with a digital camera like most of his friends will probably get. Film- and manual exposure and focus- teach you discipline that just blasting away taking 100 almost-identical photos and hoping one "turns out" better doesn't. That discipline pays off in better photographs IMHO.

Yup, 100% agreed on that. With film you need to be more precise than digital actually. Using film needs a different mentality than using digital.
I still like to use film, actually so far this year 2016 I think I used my film cameras a bit more than my digital. Although sometime I'd go out with both film and digital cameras.
Well, I actually started my photography when I was about 13, around the same age as your grandson now. There were no digital camera back than. Anyway, lucky kid. Now next step is to give him a roll of Tri-X and show him how to develop it himself
