Hello, all!

Since I can follow simple instructions, here I am to introduce myself. This seemed to be the place with the best collective knowledge base for Von Schweikert speakers.

I am a new owner of a pair of older (I believe, original and unmolested) Von Schweikert VR4's. I believe they are the first gen because the upper mid/hi box is rectangular, correct? I purchased them from a retired electrical engineer that has been buying, fixing, and selling higher end hifi gear for 30+ years as a side business. According to him, he bought these 15+ years ago, and they needed no repairs / maintenance at all. He ran them in his 'main' room for a while, but the WAF became a concern. I get the feeling he was really hoping I would buy the Emerald Physics units he had instead.  I got them for $1100, which I gather is a fair deal.

The first thing I figured out is I don't have enough amp for them. They replaced a pair of Paradigm 9seMK3's that I had bi-amped on a Rotel RB-976 amp. That would easily get earsplittingly loud. When I tried to run the VR4's with 2 mono channels, the amp was shutting off before I could even get to moderate listening levels. (I believe the impedance is too low in parallel to drive them?). After re-wiring them to a bi-amp configuration, they sound fine, but I had the turn the gains to 80% just to get decent volume from them. My presumption is that they are just pretty power hungry. The Rotel should be doing about 75-80 WPC to each of the left / right, and mid / bass units. Too little?

The same guy offered to sell me a Rogue Audio Stereo 90 tube amp, with some kind of upgraded motherboard & tubes (upgraged to Stereo 100, I think he said?). He was asking $1200, and said it would be perfect to power the mid / high cabinets. Then I could bridge the Rotel to give 150WPC to the bass cabinets alone.

Does this sound like a recipe for Success?

I really loved the wound of the speakers when I listened to them in his garage. I also understand that placement is super important with these speakers, so once I re-arrange my room to have them closer to the corners, I imagine I'll get better response too.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Thanks!

Greetings & Welcome to AC  JettaG    :thumb:  You'll likely get better viewing & response to your questions by starting a thread here   http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?board=139.0 in the Von Schweikert circle (if you haven't already). You might even see something from the man himself.  8)

Jetta,
I had a pair of Vortex Screens made by Albert just before he made the VR-4s and used 140/channel Mod Squad 405's and later Bryston 8-B amps (250/channel).  Both sounded very good with the Bryston a little clearer from the mids up.  I have a pair of Nuforce Ref 9 V3 SE mono amps (175/channel) that I could be persuaded to sell that would be a very upgrade to either of those amps.  Let me know if you have any interest.  I also have an Edge M6 (120/channel) that would be an upgrade to the other 2 amps that i could sell.

Hello,

Albert recommends bi-amping with a single ended tube amp for the top modules.....you can find his advice in some of the older Von Schweikert Posts....I run mine with Odyssey Audio Kismet hybrid monos- 250+ watts per channel and they sound real good although I have heard them with a S.E.T. running the top modules and some excellent tube amps running the bottom and to my ears it was the best sound I have heard.... and yes if you paid $1100 and they are in good condition you got a great deal

Good Luck!

Thanks, All!

Upon further digging, I think my issue is a gain mismatch issue. My AVR (Older Yamaha), is only outputting 1.0v on the pre-outs, and my Rotel has an 'input sensitivity' of 1.5V. That would explain why I have to jack my gains on the Rotel really high to get decent (but not loud) volume.

I have the same issue powering my Behringer EP2000 amp which is dedicated to my dual 15" DIY subs. (using an Art CleanBox Pro to overcome the pre-out voltage difference).

Since I don't want to add more stuff in the signal chain, I think my next move may be upgrading to a pre-pro. I don't use any of the amplifiers in the Yamaha AVR, so it's just a processor replacement. I'm looking at Anthem units (D2), because they offer balanced XLR pre-outs, and l/r sub outs which would be useful for my setup.

Good move?
Thanks!

Hey Jetta

Definitely come on over to the VSA circle here. I've heard lots of VS speakers and never found a need to run brute force amps on them, quite the opposite in fact.  Welcome aboard.

Patrick (I help moderate the VSA circle :)
