No sound from one channel of Bryson 3bsst
« on: 9 May 2016, 05:34 pm »
A peculiar thing has happened to me . In my stereo set up with a passive pre and Bryson 3bsst , one channel is mute . Right now it is right channel from which no sound is coming. One by one , I checked up every possible reason for muted one channel , finally it appears it is with the amp . But in my Bryson both the LEDs perfectly light up to green on powering on , . Is it possible that even though both the LEDs are green , there could be problem in output of right channel of 3bsst. I have checked the lose connections and have also checked the cables and DAc. what could be the possible reasons behind right channel not giving any sound to speaker.. Again I would stress the point that on powering on both the channels led turns green on powering the amp

Did you somehow put it in bridged mode?

If it was switched to bridged mode, I don't think there would be any output between hot and ground on either channel. (?)

Swap the connections (ICs and SCs) right to left, left to right.  If the right channel starts working then amp is OK.

Not sure how bridged mode works exactly. I've never run an amp this way. I was just posing the question. Why would there not be any output from either side? From what I understand, if the amp is in bridge mode, just one designated set of outputs (output devices) is active (left or right) and thus the other output side is deactivated. We don't need to go into technical details of bridging, but in terms of function, what I'm saying should be correct, right?

In bridged mode usually you connect the speakers' + and - cables to the red terminals only.

Occasionally one of the channels shutdown on my 3B SST/2. This is a thermal shutdown as that channel gets too hot, usually from intense rock or electronic music, and the spl is around 95 decibels C weighted. Stopping the music for about ten minutes to let it cool down it comes back on green and I'm good to go. 8)

I hope not my blood!

Also the 3B SST which I also have has less wattage than the SST/2 so it will shutdown at a lower spl. When I was using the SST for my Paradigm Studio 100 v2 it didn't have enough wattage for the spl I listen at.

Let's see, the songs I recall causing thermal shutdown were Methademic by Black Sabbath, album 13, Let There be Rock, AC/DC, Live in Donington, Jet Lag by DJ Kim. It also shut down just the other day listening to Best of Black Sabbath.

I have Tool which has never caused shutdown and some Megadeth that I haven't really listen to.

Oh, and one more, I Can't Keep from Cryin by Ten Years After, Fillmore East, which is pretty intense prolong guitar playing.

The problem is right from power on stage , so no question of thermal shut down or high db level . Can James explain this phenomenon and possible causes?

Hi

I would say reverse the RCA or Balanced input - left vs right - to make sure it is the am channel that is the problem and not the source feed.  If the lack of sound is still n the same channel then the amplifiers input section may have an issue.  In that case we need to get it serviced.
