HI:

I am getting in new speakers to try and if I like them, I will be putting my beloved Selah Audio TRT model speakers up for sale.  The TRT speakers are a 2.5 way speaker with all Revelation ScanSpeak drivers including the Aircirc tweeters.  According to Rick Craig, these speakers are close to 89db in sensitivity.  Also according to Rick the tuning is in the low 30's for the ported cabinet.(mine is built with a rear port)

These speakers were built by me.  If you were to have Rick professionally build them, they would cost up to $3,500.  Below is a link I posted upon completion of these speakers.  It has plenty of pictures.

http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=71964.0

If I like the new speakers better than the TRT's they will go up for sale.  My asking price is $1,500 which doesn't even cover the costs of the  drivers/crossovers/cabinetry materials/veneer/etc.

I am not going to ship these.  I live in NE Ohio and am more than willing to drive say 125 miles one way to meet you halfway for a delivery.

If you are interested, just PM me and I will send you detailed pictures.  From 5 feet away they look perfect.  However, if you stand right next to them you will see very minor cracks in the rosewood veneer.  Again, if interested, I will send pictures to you that will document any imperfections.

Regards,

Randy

I noticed a typo in the link that I provided about my build...

In the link I typed that the tweeters are the ScanSpeak AirCirc 9600.  That is a mistake!  The tweeters in the TRT model  are the ScanSpeak D3400/6600 AirCirc model.

Sorry for any confusion.

Randy

Hello Rklein,

First, that's a handsome speaker and a job well done, kudos.

This is a naive question from the uninformed with no DIY experience so please excuse me ... but with a DIY kit like this, how much of the work is Rick Craig's (crossover and speaker design) and how much is yours. In other words, if Mr. Craig was to build the speaker in his shop, could we assume that the speakers would sound similar, if not the same - or is the question too complicated with too many variables in play?

All best,
Lester

Hi Lester:

Thanks for your question.

The design of the speaker is all Rick Craig.  As he states on his website, his kits contain the following:

Cabinet Drawings, Assembly Instructions, Drivers, Assembled and Pre-wired Crossovers, Input Terminals, Screws, Quick Disconnects, Ports (Vented Designs), Gasket Tape (where applicable), and Free Shipping in the U.S.

While I did follow the instructions from Rick's cabinet Drawings that had the measurements for the cabinet both exterior and interior, I did add extra side panels to my build. While Rick’s design calls for the width to be 9”, I decided to cut two extra side panels of ¾ MDF which I then used my router on the front edge using an Ogee Stepped Shear Cut Bit.  This enabled me to glue the side panels on to the original design while only adding 1/8” per side.  This also added to the rigidity of the cabinet.  These cabinets sound dead when you knock your knuckles on the sides.

I cannot speak to what type of MDF that Rick's cabinet guys would use in their construction but as I stated in my build thread, I originally went to Home Depot and then to Lowes.  However, a cabinet/wood guy recommended a place called Cleveland Plywood.   The MDF at HD and Lowes is made off shore by China and shipped in.  Cleveland Plywood had MDF/HDF made in Canada with stricter QC.  There was no comparison in the quality.  The HDF is way better than the MDF you can source from the big box stores.

I also made one other change to my speakers that I feel is a big deal.  After listening to the speakers with the stock internal wiring that Rick supplies, I decided to upgrade the wiring.  For the AirCirc Tweeters, I replaced the stock wiring with UniCrystal OCC Silver Hookup Wire with AirLok from VH Audio.  For the two woofers, I replaced the stock wiring with Gronberg Quattro Reference speaker cables that I had bought from Klaus at Odyssey Audio.

I am confident that my DIY speakers with all stock parts would have the same sound signature of the same model built professionally by Selah.  However, with the changes I made I believe that it only enhanced the sound over an already great design.

Regards,

Randy

OK.  I checked with FedEx and between shipping materials - double boxed, padding, tape, etc. and shipping FedEx ground (4 days) we are talking between $250 to $300.

I really do not want to ship but if I do the price would be $1,200 + $300 + $45(PP fees) for a total of $1,545(or less depending on shipping costs).

Shipping to CONUS only.

Hello.  I am new to the forum.  I grew up in NE Ohio and will be visiting around April 15th.  I have been researching Selah (only about 20 minutes form my house) and have spoken to Rick a couple times.  If you still have these in April, I would be interested in hearing them.  We are flying, so I would not be able to take them back, but if I like them, I may consider buying them and leaving them at my parents house until I can bring them home.

Thanks

Paul

These speakers are drop-dead gorgeous and if it wasn't for the need for shipping, I would be the new owner.
But I noticed that back in 2012 on the diyaudio site you mentioned you were swapping out the tweeter s and crossovers for Raal tweeters. Can I ask what happened to that plan and why?
Thanks

I had heard great things about these tweeters and wanted to try them. Rick had a pair of Raal tweeters that he had available from another build and offered them to me.  He also built specific crossovers for the Raal's.

The Raal tweeters have a rectangular "box" that is behind the tweeter ribbon.  I had to cut some of the inside lip of the original tweeter openings so that the box part of the Raal's would go through the opening.  The tweeter housing on the front is also rectangular and covered the outer edge of the round tweeter hole.  Rather than drill screw holes on the front of the cabinet to screw the Raal's in, I opted for duct tape to keep the Raal's in place while I tried them out.  After living with the Raals for over two months, I decided that I preferred the soft dome SS tweeters in these speakers.  To be fair to the Raals, I was having some problems with humming that was coming from a tube preamp I was using at the time.

Anyway, when it came time to put the SS tweeters back in, I had to glue in little pieces of MDF back on the inner lip of the tweeter openings, file the opening back to round and then redrill my holes for the SS tweeters.  Very niggily work that took a lot of patience.

Randy

Hi Paul:

I am just finishing up my C.A.P.S. pipeline music server.  If I have my system up and running while you are visiting, you are more than welcome to come over to hear the speakers.  I will PM you if my system is running by then.
