BDA-2 output impedance
« on: 6 Jan 2016, 01:54 pm »
Hello!

What is the output impedance of the BDA-2 through it's XLR and RCA analog outputs?

Is BDA-2 suitable for use with a passive preamp to drive a power amp with an input impedance of 10 kOhm?

Thanks!

In the Audioshark audio forum, James Tanner stated that the output impedance of the BDA-2 DAC was

RCA – 72 Ohms
XLR – 72 Ohms per leg

http://www.audioshark.org/bryston-audio-40/bda-2-output-impedance-8377.html

I'm sure, impedance wise, it would drive the power amplifier just fine, but as you know even with a good impedance ratio some users say the sound is not quite as full (lean?) with a passive preamp vs an active preamp stage with gain.

Thank you Steve!

I was just trying to see whether this wpuld work or would using the BHA-1 headphone amplifier as a preamplifier yield better results.

Cheers!

Yes, if you try the comparison, report back with your subjective sound quality evaluation.

I only tried a DAC direct to power amp once, but because it was an early version Emotiva XDA-1 DAC with incorrectly programmed linear vs logarithmic volume control, I only had 3 or 4 volume steps between lowest and highest volumes and couldn't really give it a proper evaluation.

Yes there is ample gain too in the BDA2 to drive the passive pre amp, cables, etc. I did that for a long time into my 14B. Mind you that had 50k on the 14B impedance but still 10k is not low enough to drag the output down.
