Here's my 2 cents.  I love JRiver.  You buy it once and then you can purchase updates if you choose (normally 1 or 2 a year).  Updates usually offered for abt $20 to current users.  I buy them, but probably don't need to update every time - sometimes the update seems to be mostly improvements to their video system, which I don't use.  If you watch JRiver on a computer screen (not the simpler interface version on handhelds like my Kimble) you have some nice toys to play with.  Once set up, you can instantly click on a link that gives you lyrics, or another for images, yet another for Wiki, and on and on.  I have learned more music history since getting JRiver than I ever knew before.  If it's in the music's metadata, you can see who wrote a song - gives a lot of insight into the performance and has improved my opinion of several shady characters.

I also recommend dBpoweramp for ripping.  Not too expensive and simple enough.  Will keep all meta-data updated in your rips for abt $5 a year.

When I started this journey I quickly realized I didn't enjoy setting up software, so I went the simpler route.  Well worth the price to me - if you enjoy spending hours deciphering instructions, or know a lot about operating computers, have at it.

If you are talking MusicBee, leave the check-box unchecked.
This option is intended for onboard audio running at 48 only

If you are talking the sample rate in the Win audio panel, set it to something.
As you are using WASAPI in MusicBee this setting is ingnored.

Ok, a little trouble, sure Im just doing something wrong.  I can rip a CD to it, I did 2. One seemed to do OK, one had all the songs out of order, everything still plays but why one in order and one not?  The other thing is, the site shows this nice dark back ground with pics of the album art, then which ever one you are playing down below with the names of the songs and which one is playing.  I just get a list, and if I play it, a thumbnail of the album art.  I dont get the nice library shot they show on line.  I am sure I am just doing something wrong.

If you mean the latest one, that's what I downloaded 2.5 from November? 2.5.5804?

If you mean "no just download this one"  OK, do I delete the first one or just download on top?

What is the trick to get it to rip CDs that I have burned to a disc?  The rip Fails.  Am I missing a setting for these?  Make that regular CDs as well, they are all failing to rip...now what.  I must have messed up a setting

You might also want to check out Ted B's set up videos for JRiver from the Hirez circle.  They're pretty good.

figured it out.  I had downloaded foobar, thinking I would try it too.  I guess the MusicBee wont run with it on board, alls working well now.

I will probably try the Jriver and Jplay at some point as well, just beginning here.  I have another question, if I end up with a NAS system, can it be played through these players I suppose?  I would think it would be no different than using a CD in the drive and playing that through the player.

Another question, will these player systems let you put the music on them on the NAS?

Really odd that Foobar kept it from working, but going through anything I may have changed, that came up.  I hadnt put any music on it yet, so I just deleted it, and suddenly the MusicBee worked again.

Interesting start to all this.

Thanks all,

Russellc

If you are talking about playback the answer is simple. WASAPI has an exclusive lock  on the audio device. Hence only the one having this lock will play.

You can have the audio files on a NAS.
Just point the media player to the share containing these files.

Thankyou for the info on the NAS, I figured that was possible.  As to the other issue, after ripping 2 or 3 CDs to MusicBee, I thought I would download Foobar to make a few comparisons.  Then I went back to MusicBee and attempted to download a CD I had burned myself.  It failed to rip.  I tried another CD I had burned, and it too failed.  At this point I assumed the problem was with the self burned CDs.

Then, I came to the conclusion that the problem was with burned CDs, and posted about this issue.  Shortly thereafter I attempted to burn some more CDs that I had purchased but they too failed!  I then reposted about that and began looking for anything I had changed.  I could find nothing that was preventing the rip.  The only change left was the installation of Foobar.  I had not attempted to rip anything with it, so figuring I could always redown load it later, I deleted it from my computer.

Then I tried to rip a purchased CD and it went fine.  I then grabbed the ones I had burned and re tried them with complete success!

Oh well no big deal, MusicBee seems to work fine now.
