Hello from Charleston SC
« on: 15 Oct 2015, 09:20 pm »
So I am back after 10 years.  I sold most of my system and moved onto a big boat.  Now I am back to a house, I am getting back into it.  I used to be "Scubadon". I found a pair of pass labs "rushmore" speakers and am starting my system with them. My old system was VMPS rm40s, pass labs x350, and wadia 850.

I have missed the interaction with everyone on audio circle. I guess I have a lot of catching up to do?

Thanks, Don

Blackmore

Always fun to find an audio fan who's been away.  Just some quick updates:

Compact Discs and they're players are nearing extinction.  Everyone is downloading to their computers (or dedicated music servers) with a number of different softwares available (for better sound and access) and using DAC's.  Combination DAC/pre/headphone amp units have become popular.  Used CD's are cheap.

The 16/44 CD format still exist but the move is onto higher resolution (hi-res) of PCM or DSD/DXD (derived from SACD) at various sampling rates.  Thus DAC technology continues to be a fast moving target.

Digital amps (multiple classifications now) have gone from golden child to the bane of all back to being respected again, but conventional solid state and tube gear are both still popular.

Speakers, turntables, and accessories haven't changed much.

Charleston is a lovely place.  We are in Charlotte NC, and like to visit from time to time including Dewees Island.

You have not missed too much honestly.  The advertising and equipment hyperbole is more ubiquitous due to cyberspace.  You can still get good sound with vintage gear.  Rather than Audiogon, I recommend Craigslist.... 8)
