Australian 1801b's completed
« on: 12 Oct 2004, 12:38 am »
Hi All

Just wanted to let you know that I've finished a pair of 1801b's down here in Australia. Many thanks to Dave for his brilliant website, unending advice and tips, and to this forum for providing inspiration and laughs!

For the record, the speakers were made from pre-veneered MDF (17mm) with a 22mm solid Jarrah front baffle. Jarrah is a native Australian gum species only found (they tell me) in my home state of Western Australia. It's a deep red colour. Finish was achieved with several coats of Minwax poly rub. I might even do some more to improve it - but I'm enjoying listening to them too much right now!

I would do a few things differently next time, mainly around attention to detail on the MDF edges, but overall I'm pretty happy. It was basically my first woodwork project, so I've been on a steep learning curve. The sound is phenomenal - I think that was inevitable with Dave's design and cabinet/crossover plans, but it sure is nice to hear clarity like you get with these speakers. I now have to upgrade everything else in the signal path to improve the sound to a level that does them justice. First stop, a nice amp!

Dave's kindly put up a picture of one of the speakers at his site, linked below:

Speaker stands are a work in progress...
The old speakers (just in view) are Richter Wizards Mk II...

I do also have some other pics, and if anyone's interested, I'll post them at another location for you to look at.

Thanks again to Dave Ellis, and to this forum...

Hi Dave,

You certainly have done an excellent job building the speaker cabinets,
especially as this is your first experience at speaker building.

I'm sure that you are aware that hifi is Very expensive here in oz and i would estimate that you would need to spend at least $5000au to have the quality of speakers like the ellis audio's.

Best wishes and happy listening
