RMAF thoughts and reflections
« on: 11 Oct 2004, 10:58 pm »
Just back from RMAF and I thought I'd reflect on the entire experience.

First off Ron Welborne and gang did a great job.   The show was a first rate production.

Second.... it was great to finally meet some of the people whom I only correspond with via forums, email and phone calls.

In terms of equipment at the show, the standouts for me where the following:

Favorite Speakers:   Bastani Prometheus   http://www.bastanis.com/

I was so favorably impressed with these speakers that I've started to talk with Robert about handling them in the USA.   They fill a real need for a small, inexpensive high efficiency speaker that works exceptionally well with SET amplifiers.   One of the biggest challenges when using SET amplifiers is a speaker choice and the Prometheus and Robert's other speakers worked wonders with the Lady Days (300B SET).   I think the biggest reason I'm excited about the possibility of picking up the line is so that I get to have a demo set for my own listening room!      It is rare that I get overly excited about new equipment now days but these speakers are the exception.

Favorite Room:

I spent the most time by necessity in my own room so it wouldn't be fair for me to comment on others in a negative way.   I obviously liked the room the Bastani's were playing in as evidenced from above.

Other rooms that tickled my fancy where the SP Technology speakers.   They are good ole Hoosiers from my ole stomping grounds and they know how to build a speaker (and use good room treatments) judging from their room.   Wish I could have spent more time in their room but time was short.

Odyssey rooms where great.   I love people who build cost effective gear and Odyssey continues to offer great bang for the buck products.

Bottlehead:   Dan had the only "headphone only" room at the show.   His new little headphone amp (S.E.X.) along with some really cool open reel recordings was really cool.  If headphones are your thing Doc's new offering should please.

ModWright Room: I didn't really get to listen much to the room but I love Dan's new line stage.   We used one in our room and if the sample I used was any indication of how the production versions are going to sound then Dan will do VERY well.

Favorite Source:   Well.... I'm a little biased but our up and coming Well Tempered Labs Amadeus is going to be incredible.   If you don't listen to vinyl you will soon change your mind.

Kevin,

It was great meeting you.

I wish you the best of luck on your new projects.

I never made it into your favorite room, but I agree that two of the better rooms were the SP Tech and Odyysey.  These two systems sounded very different and were also spaced out quite a bit price wise.  However, both were very enjoyable and would provide tons of enjoyment.

Yes.... great meeting you George.

The Bastani's are probably not something everyone would like.    They fit my taste though which tends towards single ended amplifers driving appropriate speakers.

There are plenty of ways to skin a cat though and everyone is going to have different taste and priorities in a system.   The Lady Day, Django (TX-102 transformer line stage), Prometheus system would be in the $3500 range and that is a chunk of money for most people.   Add a bunch of cables, rack, source and other goodies and you could easily have $5000 wrapped up in the system.   It would sound better than most systems that cost multiples of that price though...  :)
