The very first Cambridge Audio Dacmagic was only mediocre. More recent Dacs in the same price range are better.

Stereophile best of 2013/2014 and Audiostream favorite bits and greatest bits are good places to start your research.

With DAC technology advancing so quickly, recommend not over investing and accept the concept to gain "X" dollars worth of enjoyment per month/year as your purchase will inevitably depreciate.

The best DAC for you and your system cannot be predicted without home auditions.

+1 - nothing beats auditions and hearing them in a system you're familiar with.  For a secondary system, I heard a stack of DACs (5 of them) at the 2013 Capital Audiofest and based on apples to apples comparisons made a choice.  The DACs I heard in that system were not drastically better than the competition but someone who had the most expensive of the lot (and they ranged from $500-$1.8k) listened to my choice in their own system and sold the old DAC.  Something may sound so-so in a particular system and have an different outcome in a different system.
