potentiometer or ALPS for Sure amplifier boards?
« on: 18 Jun 2015, 02:15 pm »
I bought the recommended C+C Panasonic potentiometer from Digi-Key posted in the earlier Sure 3110 and 3116 board topic here.
Man , those tiny pot pins are close together ! I'll try and see if I can use it with my helping hand......

but, my spare parts box has standard 10K and 50K Stereo Pots from PE.
Using a small board amp like the Sure for a workshop driving C+C speakers, is there any big difference in results between a garden variety pot or the ALPS  Blue Velvet ones availalble on the bay for around $15 shipped ?

ALPS are very good, but so are Panasonic. They are both about an equal step above standard pots.

Just bend the pins on the Panasonic a little bit to help make soldering easier. I actually replaced the pot in a Trends TA 10.1 with a Panasonic back when modding the Trends was tall the rage. I am NOT AT ALL prolific at soldering (novice at best), but was able to complete the job just fine. You might Google "modding Trends TA 10.1" for tips on soldering the Panasonic pot.

An ALPS blue is a nice pot, but a pot nonetheless.  Doubt there would be much difference in the sound, if any.   :o

Wiring the Panasonic pot is not really that difficult, and it sounds GREAT! I have done 3 of them now, and I am no expert solder slinger for sure.
Here's a couple I did:

With pots in general, it's not so much an issue of sound quality as it is an issue of precise left and right channel tracking, particularly when the pot knob is in any position below about 12 o'clock. The more the pot has to attenuate, the worse channel balance and tracking is. This was the major reason for replacing the junky stock pot in the Trends 10.1. It tracked HORRIBLY at low volumes.....as to be expected from a very cheap part.

Yep , the potentiometer in my original Lepai 2020 was pretty awful. When I moved up to the Topping 21 for PC sound the improvement between the  2 was pretty significant

What is the pin legend for the Panasonic pot with the 6 pins ?
I looked at the manuf. data sheet at Digikey but couldn't see that

Get an SMT resistor stepped attenuator off of eBay. You'll never go back. Pots sound like pots, which sound like not that good.

Interesting. That'd likely be more of a drop-in replacement, in terms of size and layout than an ALPS or Panasonic pot too.

I'm trying to find the wiring diagram for the six pins on the panasonic EVJ with google but no luck.
The posted photo of the altoids volume control is almost but not quite clear enough to determine I/O and ground for sure
I have some PTFE tubing from Redco that will fit right over the lead and pin.

Lookup "mods for Trends 10.1." Using the Panasonic EVJ pot was a very common and recommended mod. You might have to sift through info to find what you need, though....since it has been years since the Trends was the hot ticket on a budget.

Use a "third hand" to hold the pot, and wire. I pre-tinned the leads, and wire before soldering. If you alternately bend (carefully) the leads up or down, it will give you the clearance needed to fit your iron. You can bend them back straight when they are all soldered.

This is the diagram that Rhing supplied.

Now - that you have the wiring diagram, connect that pot to your amp. I think you will be pleasantly surprised :thumb: A resistor stepped attenuator may be better yet, but these EJV Panasonic pots do sound pretty darn good with these class D amps. Especially when they were less than $2

Thanks for your help  'cro, I'm not sure if these Panasonic EVJ pots are still around at Digi-Key .
I picked up most of my parts a while back but was too busy working until now to try them.
