Power cabling recommendation
« on: 18 Jun 2015, 12:14 am »
I saw (heard) an A/B comparison of some high end Kimber cables vs. stock cables in an average system at the Newport Audio Show.  The difference was stunning to me, as being a relative newbie, I had always wondered about the effect of cabling.  The Kimbers were impressive, but a bit out of my price range.  Does anyone have a suggestion for high quality power cables under $200?

Thanks!

I've heard many good reports of Panagea cables.

The Belden 83803 DIY cable is a winner.  You can buy the wire from parts express for about $12 a foot bulk, and attach your own high quality terminations.  Well under your price point. Only issue with the DIY 83803 is it's very stiff to work with, but makes a great cable after you throw a little techflex on it.  I have several of them which I use in my system.  I also have a couple of custom power cables made by Cullen Cables in California.  If you don't want to build your own, Cullen Cables has high quality power cables under $100, and higher end offerings under $200.  The owner is Patrick Cullen.  He does outstanding work at very reasonable prices.  Service is awesome.

+1 on the Cullen power cords.  I have several crossovers in my system. Replaced Pangea.

I DIY mine from Belden 19364 and Furutech connectors (But avoid the FI-15 Series as the housings on the males tend to snap of and the IEC's have a crimp connector for the ground and no spares).

I'll agree the Belden 83803 is good as well.  Like vonnie123 said it is somewhat stiff; too stiff for my liking so I sold it on.  The buyer was very happy with the results in his system.

I like the looks of those Cullen ones.  If I wasn't comfortable with DIY I would probably give them a shot.

DIY or buy used.

Scroll through the classifieds of your favourite audio sites and you will see tons of PC's for your price point.  Perhaps even some Kimber.

I have had excellent success with Bolder Cable gear, you may see some of that used.

Consider Signal Cable or 'standard' hospital grade power cords.

FYI the Signal Cable power cord I have is extremely stiff.

Belden is always a good safe choice.

On another note:
It turns out that Romex® is one of the best power cables that you can get. But it's not a flexible cord.

I'll say DIY, too. Although Parts Connexion's DH Labs cord for like $109 is a great buy for good connectors. In fact you can't order the parts cheaper from them. That being said, you can use better stuff for DIY.

Just make sure you understand the correct color coordination, no wires touching each other, and as much compression as you can reasonably get without stripping anything.

Good deals on Neotech wire at VH Audio. Don't forget to budget for a stripping tool!

Bob Crumps Asylum Powercord (Belden 19364) is available from Take Five Audio in Canada for $57.01 + shipping for a 5ft length. All the parts and cable are available to make your own as well. I have had very good results using Supra Lo-Rad 3x2.5mm shielded cable for DIY. It is more flexible than the Belden due to many strands of fine gauge and a flexible jacket. Lars at Sjofn HiFi can provide the cable by the meter as well as sell you already factory terminated cords. 1m is $90 and 2 m is $100 plus shipping (figures are a bit old so you would have to contact him to be sure.

Asylum cord: http://www.takefiveaudio.com/mall/shopexd.asp?id=1079 Belden 19364 is $3.99/ft

Supra Lo-Rad: lars@sjofnhifi.com  www.sjofnhifi.com  3x2.5m cable only is $18 per m

Wireworld Stratus & Aurora power cables are under $200 (of course depending on length).  Aurora is a bit warmer with fatter bottom end a bit more mid-range emphasis - good for leaner systems.  Stratus overall is more neutral with tighter though not as deep bass.  I use WW Stratus on many of my systems & components.

Can anyone recommend a vendor for 10 AWG shielded?  I have not been able to locate one that is not cost prohibitive.

There is a vendor selling Futuretech shielded 10 AWG @ $40 / ft, I'm looking for pricing on bulk rolls, possibly from a parts supply or wholesaler.

Thanks -

Please disregard.  I called a local electrical supplier and found what I was looking for!
