When purchasing a new imac to use as a music server, does getting a SSD hardrive offer any sonic benefits over the regular hardrive version?

Probably not as much as using something other than itunes as a music player (e.g. PureMusic / Audiovarna / Jriver et) and using those in "Memory Play" mode where the track is buffered to internal memory. Doing that the need for SSD vs regular HD is greatly reduced.

Depends on whether it has a 3.5" drive and how far away you are from it. Personally I can't stand the noise and would be inclined to get a mini with SSD (preferably a 2012 model) and a cheap screen. Oh wait...

Recently I switched from an external mechanical hard drive to an internal solid state hard drive. I’ve not noticed any sonic performance change. That said, my 2012 MM performs access related tasks pretty darn snappy
