I guess also if it couldn't be priced for less than the drives themselves that people would be installing then that could dissuade potential buyers.

Why not as diy kits? Bryston saves on assembly cost, customers gets match design case, dampening material, PSU and some OEM S-ATA to USB converter circuit board and great experience building own USB disk enclosure...
