Excellent discussion. The hardware between my 3.7 and 3.7i are clearly different. The 3.7 were cherry wood and the 3.7i are black aluminum. So, I attribute the difference between wood, which gets wood screws and aluminium which gets machine screws, not 3.7 vs. 3.7i...

Grant,
The slots in the supports that attach to the back of the speaker had to be enlarged to fit the machine screws. I used a dremel tool and it only took a few minutes.

That's probably it, my 3.7i are dark cherry, seems likely the aluminum frame would use machine screws.  An advantage construction-wise in my view.

The wood screws goes right through the MDF and grip into the solid wood strips on the front. I have not found any srewa that grips into the slap of MDF. The feet are screwed into nuts inserts. I am refering to the 3.6. I think it is the same for the 3.7 or 3.7i.

The aluminium over MDF may have a thread for machine screws in them but it is just 3-4 mm of aluminium, do not overtighten the screws.

Back on April 12th I commented here that my upgraded 3.7i speakers don't have the 2-1/2" wide damping tape on the backside of the mid-range driver.  Actually they do have it.  With adequate light from a window it is visible under the exterior fabric, not easy to see.

So we can expect every 3.7i to have that tape installed?

I can't answer your question Roger, but when I thought mine did not have the tape, I called Magnepan and was told they are all modified the same.  At the time that answer was perplexing since I thought mine didn't have it while others did.  Don't know if anyone else has said theirs don't have the tape.

I've seen recent pics in magazines (TAS) which show a solid, oval base on what's supposed to be 3.7's.  Any info on this base, esp.is it retrofittable on 3.6R's ?   I know there are many, varied options for upgrade to the standard stands. Just curious about these photos, and whether the solid, oval platform stand is better than previous for my 3.6R's.

I asked Wendell about the new base; "The new oval base for the 3.7i will fit on older models".

If it's like the ones on the 20.7 they're not going to offer any additional support as the mounting brackets are the short and stubby variety.
They do raise them off of the floor a bit and make them really easy to move around plus they look pretty cool.
