Mad Max: Fury Road
« on: 22 Mar 2015, 01:02 am »
F**k Marvel, the movie I want to see the most this year is Fury Road. Just from the trailers I know it is going to be an instant classic. I haven't wanted to see a movie opening night in ages but I am going to be first in line for this. George Miller is one of the best directors around and arguably the best action director alive (sorry J. Woo!). I mean from Road Warrior to the sequel of a movie about a talking pig - a bad@ss sequel to a movie about a talking pig. I mean, that's more range than Spielberg or QT can possibly dream of.

Man I can't wait!!

This trailer is SICK!!!!

and this one!!!

Excited. My only fear is if they over play Charlieze Theron

This is the best action movie in ages. The originality of vision is worthy of an Oscar nomination for George Miller who once again - at the age of 70 no less - proves himself a master of the motion picture. I am so excited to see the younger generation loving this film and appreciating the genius involved. My only minor gripes are:

1) Hardy is no Mel. I like Hardy a LOT but he is pretty much sidelined here and I'm not sure I care for his turn as Max. Then again there's a trilogy planned so maybe the character is expected to evolve. Does make me appreciate though how great Gibson is as an actor, especially given how little dialogue is used in the Mad Max movies. This is a minor grip though since Theron's character pretty much assumes the Max persona, and does so, well... to the max.

2) Some of the dialogue was hard to hear. But since there's so little of it anyway, no big loss. And I'll be watching this film many times to come so I'll figure it out eventually.

I think everyone should see this movie. It is breathless and breathtaking. Dean Semler came out of retirement just to shoot the film. Some of the scenes are just incredible.

And what I love the most is that the Mad Max are the most realistic IMO of post-apocalyptic films. As insane as they are they absolutely to me represent the ingenuity and madness of humanity through both the filmmaking and the story.

Gamechanger cinema.

I hope it ushers in a new age of physical stunts.  CGI superhero crap is getting old.

I thought it was terrific.  I'm not normally a 3d fan, but the 3d effects were well-done and added a lot.
My son and I saw it the day it came out.

I loved the bleakness of the original, and this has some of that too.

I don't think it's a classic. At best it's a 3D thrill ride. At worst... well...

No character development. The over the top political stuff is foul with stupidity or makes no sense. Who gave those women feminist literature? Uh? Right... And yet strangely fails to be a full blown feminist movie since all the women basically make choices that will be their demise, but Max (who sucks in this) talks/forces them out of it. They're so full of perfectness, yet a man has to be around so they don't kill themselves. The movie gets ludicrous with the evil white man trope, and the should/shouldn't morality of the War Boys.

I'll elaborate a little...

Well not on the feminist part, I'm sick of a word that means everything, to which one is an enemy or not. But why were the women super models? Hmm, doesn't compute.

Max? Where's the witty comments? Gibson was fantastic. He wanted to be left alone really, but when in situations his big mouth could get him a little bit of attention and yet save him too. He talked... He explained some stuff. But Hardy basically doesn't talk - for fear of mansplaining or something? Dark, mysterious, and only speaks when he knows you'll die? I can't tell if they just didn't want you to get attached or he's suppose to play some sorta "ideal" man? He was literally gag'd for half the movie.

The War Boys commentary blew my mind on stupidity. I've got a question, if the War Boys didn't glorify Valhalla, wish to have comradery, participate in a greater cause, etc... What the fuck else would they do? Did you notice the shit hole they live in? It's dust and otherwise poisoned aside from some questionable water source of Immortan Joe's.

I suppose I'm not sure where to stop... but for a turn

I highly recommend rewatching Mad Max 2&3 in High Definition Wide Screen. The emotions, the variance in characters physical forms, faces, etc are wonderful as they're played out. The cinematography is so much better than I ever realized when I was young, it's not Mad Max good, it's just good period. . . (deserves a few periods). Also how much more diverse can you get than in 2&3? #2 has like some sorta gay parade of buff dudes, twinks, leathers, etc, trying to run down the social justice warrior brigade of oil hogs. #3 has some sorta pansexual authority ran town lead by a mix between either a black lady or a midget riding some giant down-syndromed beast.

The flaming guitar guy just wasn't enough...

Hi,

I remember watching the original Mad Max movie way back...

Anyway, I watched Mad Max Fury Road this week and as a continuation of the original movies I thought it was great.  The new Max is definitely not as good as Mel Gibson but he does a decent job.  Great show and if you like action movies go for it.

Cheers Rod

You obviously saw a very different movie.

The previous films were for their time. Fury Road is for this one.

I too, am one who thought it was two hours of my life I'll never get back.   Close to zero character development
and what's worse...the two main characters were so one dimensional as to be nearly impossible to believe.

I love going to movies and frankly, am easily entertained.  I enjoy many of the films that the "critics" pan and
readily accept leaps of faith in the plot.  That of course  requires that there be a plot...however thin.  Fury road is a frenetic
race to the middle of the desert only to find that what they desire was always back where they came from.  The
second half of the movie is the fight back to where it started eliminating most of their enemies on the way in spite
of the fact that they are so outgunned and outnumbered that it's ridiculous!

The cgi is very good...and if that's what you go to movies to see...then it will float your boat.  Especially if your
preferred genre is "apocalyptic wars almost entirely populated and fought by mentally and genetically defective people".
If one is to take anything away from this film, it would be:  "the insanity where you are is probably still better
than the insanity you will encounter elsewhere".

Hi Guys,

Sorry disagree with some of the comments.  Really Mad Max and character development.  I guess the first film had some character development but the other two movies definitely didn't.  This show is all action and I thought the director did a great job.  Anyway just my opinion.

Actually the film is being lauded for its emphasis on practical effects and stunts, not the cgi which is mainly in the background.

For instance the flaming guitar guy's rig was in fact *fully functional*. All the speakers, guitars and amps worked, the flamethrower was real and the Doof Warrior (his name) is a real musician.

Sick.

I use to think character development was about backgrounds and what not... But I've come to realize that's just impossible in movies for the most part; that aren't centered around it.

See I don't think Mad Max 1 had good character development compared to 2&3. You learn a lot about the factors that go into Max, but little about him.

Character development is really about seeing the responses and decisions characters have to different things. FR just didn't do that. FR was about ideas, ideas, ideas... Which is very contemporary among the short sighted youth. I simply couldn't connect to the characters, there wasn't an opportunity to watch them change through events in a way that told me things about them mere words and ideas cannot. The dialog was short and simple. Just because some rando kid "speaks" to Max, - as if a 5 year old understands the world - doesn't tell me about Max. Some of us call it acting, portraying not only the role but a level of emotional engagement in the vestment of the characters life. Even if they did somehow, how can we relate to something they do? The only relation we can experience is in ideas, political opinions, that aren't relevant after an apocalypse.

To film the action at speed, Miller deployed four-wheel-drive, all-terrain trucks, which were outfitted with 26-foot-long robotic, articulated cranes. The camera truck would weave in and out of the other cars, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph.

The movie isn't about Max. It's about Furiosa. Furiosa is given all of Max's previous traits. She is the star of the movie. She is Mel Gibson. Max is the helpless hanger-on with the primal 'emotional' instincts a female character would have had if someone else made the movie. He is just a blood bank for the first chunk, a commodity just like the young girls. If Furiosa's part was Max's you would probably have zero problem with the film. One of the reasons why it's a smart, subversive film.

And how do you know what ideas are relevant after an apocalypse?

Yet the title is "Mad Max" so?????

And no, it's not classic. It was full of stupid. She didn't talk much or anything either. I wasn't bothered by her character, but don't care either. Commodity? The only thing that makes them sound like that is that Joe said they're his property. Who would say that? NO ONE, EVER.

Changing some genitals can't reverse a big butt-suck of a movie.
