6550 / KT-88 Based SET (Single-ended tetrode)

Anyone built one?

I threw one together a few weeks ago, listening to it right now. My design criteria was 10W (roughly) using only spare parts on hand. Here's what I came up with:

Here's the innards - I even re-used the casework from a previous project. I know it's ugly but it sounds fantastic! Immediate and lively is how I'd describe it.
The transformers are Hammond 1650R 100W 5K UL push-pull.. Had them laying around.. I figure the current drawn through them at 10W isn't really going to saturate them -
too much..

Knowing SE amps have NO PSRR I used giant computer grade caps and a 6HY choke and guess what - NO ripple.... These things are quiet!

The tubes are run in UL mode (screen hooked to UL tap at top of the winding - probably 80% of the winding)

Here's a frequency / distortion sweep:
(less than 2% THD @ 1kHz / 10W into 4 ohms, not too bad)

At 10W things do get a bit dodgy in the low frequencies, probably due to transformer saturation but not as much as I might have expected.
Next I'll order up some cheap and cheerful 15W Edcor SE trannies and see how the do.
