Roy Johnson and Green Mountain Audio are proud to introduce their newest speaker, the Callisto.  The Callistos will be demonstrated at the Rocky Mountain Audio Festival in Room 7026.

According to Roy Johnson, the Callisto is "500 percent better overall" than the Europa. His comparison, sound-wise:

1. It's clearer...he says he "cannot emphasize this enough!"
2. It's more open sounding
3. It's more lively and dynamic, from the bass all the way through the treble
4. Its bass is more powerful and clearer because the twin port design means far lower distortion
5. It's more sensitive by 2Db
6. It handles more power so it plays louder
7. It tilts to adjust the listening window
8. It has three fully patent-able breakthrough technologies, improvements, and changes

In Roy’s words, “the Callisto was designed for optimal sound using 24” speaker stands. Its base allows it to be tilted to accommodate any listening height in the room. Perfectly. “It has twin, aerodynamically-shaped large woofer ports exiting its bottom…hence the impression that it’s floating in air. The ports exit onto a specially-shaped, cast marble diffusor plate. The way in which we’ve designed the ports enable deep bass, which is highly dynamic and defined—bass distortion is extremely low.  On the bottom, these ports are free to interact with the room in a positive manner, which is not true for speakers with ports on the back. It leaves us room on the front, below the woofer, to apply the math developed for our Continuum 3—that is, we were free to sculpt the cabinet away with the only curves possible to keep the cabinet from acting as a reflector in the all-important voice range. The woofer itself operates into a newly-designed, nearly anechoic cabinet behind it. Inside, the long twin ports are placed to act as acoustic diffusors, a feature we’ll patent. All of this…for even more clarity.

“The tweeter is the latest generation MorelUSA, 28mm design. Possessing its own built-in rear chamber for extra sound absorption, we back it up with a cast marble chamber lined with premium acoustic wool felt in full contact with that dome’s rear chamber. This ‘sandwich construction’ fully damps the tweeter’s entire mechanical construction for the cleanest high frequencies. The tweeter is surrounded, on its face, by just the right amount of acoustic wool felt to absorb its reflections off the front of the cabinet and to throw an acoustic shadow onto the woofer directly below and to the immediate left and right, where a TV, stereo gear, and walls are usually either placed or located.

“Our MarbleMaster invented a new way of mounting the Callisto’s foam grille. Since there’s no mounting hardware, only clean lines remain when the grille is removed. It took a long time to figure out how to cast our dense, heavy marble into an aesthetically-pleasing shape and beautiful form, to mathematically meet the standards set in our Continuum 3 for lack of reflection from the edges, as well as from the cabinet itself, and to avoid any resonance from the ports between the base and the bottom of the cabinet. Even the back is acoustically shaped, with a special channel to receive speaker wires, for an elegant, clean line on all sides of the cabinet. The crossover circuit uses the latest generation of parts and mathematics to achieve perfect time coherence.”

To celebrate the newest addition to our product family, we proudly introduce the Callisto at USD$1,795 through October 31. Designer Roy Johnson will autograph the serial number label on all Callistos ordered by that date.

Specifications

Woofer: 6” rigid piston, single-pressed paper/carbon fiber cone with ultra-linear suspension, vented under-hung Kapton voice coil. Shielded, radially-magnetized neodymium-iron-boron magnet. Built for us by Aurasound. Tweeter: 28mm polymer-coated linen dome of low-resonant frequency, with large rear chamber, acoustically damped; enclosed in cast-marble chamber, mechanically damped; hex-wound aluminum voice coil, Ferrofluid cooled; 0.44 grams moving mass. From MorelUSA. Crossover: 1st-order response, electrically and acoustically, at 2850Hz. SoniCap film capacitor and Solen Litz inductor. Enclosure: Solid cast marble. Twin, aero-dynamic ports fire down onto supporting base. Specially-shaped base prevents resonances between base and cabinet bottom. 4th-order Butterworth tuning at 54Hz  with nearly zero box loss. Sensitivity: 90-91dB for 2.83 Volts input at 1 meter, at sea level. Dynamically linear within 0.5dB to 103dB. Response: Freefield at 2 meters: +/- 0.75dB 80Hz to 20kHz, -3dB at 50Hz and 21kHz. In-room: Typically –3dB at 47Hz on 24” speaker stands, at 8’ distant. Tilt adjustment built into base, +/- 5 degrees, to accommodate different listener heights and distances. Phase Shift: +/- 2 degrees acoustically, from 200Hz to 8kHz on listening axis. Rec. Power: 7 to 170 W (amplifier’s Ohm rating). Janet, welcome to Audiocircle.

Looks like Roy has a very nice design on his hands.

Do you know if you are going to be making 24" high subwoofers to act as stands?

Do you recomend any particular stands?

Do you have any pictures without the grills?

Wish you could rephrase that, as THE Marbles Master is upstairs baking an apple pie

Marbles - thanks for the kind words.  A new subwoofer is in the design phase and more information will be available soon.  Here are a few more pictures of the Callisto.

I'd say it looks a lot better than the Europa.  The Europa just doesn't do it for me aesthetically which is the main reason why I never even auditioned one.  The Callisto does look slightly look like a morph between a miniature Avalon and a PC speaker though.

There's a mention of twin ports.  I don't see it in the rear of the speaker.  Is the port downward firing thus the built in stand raising the speakers up by about two inches?

Thanks.

Thanks Marbles!

It more than answers my question.  I also realize how early senility is hitting me.  I did read that sentence but think I somehow "dissonanced" that sentenced out.

Wow - that speaker is neat.  That 6" AuraSound woofer should be splendid...that is some great technology they pack in their designs.

Weren't the Europa's about 1/3 the price of these?
At this price there will be a lot more competition.  I can't wait to hear the reviews.

I guess GMA  is finally in the process of updating their web site.  Lots of good background information on the company and their products.

I suggested a temporary site for current info about GMA and the products.  I was just thinking a simple list of files to download.. Then, I suggested this design as a prettier look to it..... I think it's an OK design for a free temp site.

The real site will look nothing like this... As it says, look for a new site in November.
