Need a Mac App- Internet Radio
« on: 5 Nov 2014, 12:19 pm »
I need something besides Itunes to manage Internet Radio. I'm thinking a MAC App so it can synch across several Mac devices/computers.

Not Pandora or Mog, etc.. This is for managing Internet Radio stations.

Looking at "Radium" -  $10 w good customer ratings. But I thought I would cast about here first.

I think TuneIn is the preferred / most popular app for Internet radio these days.....100k stations, desktop. Mobile and device (Sonos etc) support, it's free.....though there is a $10 "pro" version....

I like Snowtape which can record streams without resampling in addition to being a station manager. Current version is long in the tooth but a new version is in the works. Kinda pricey at $33 but the lossless timer recording makes it worth it for me.

FStream is a bare bones, very small footprint player that works well for me. You have to manually add the url's you want to 'tune' but a very nice freeware app if you don't mind that.

I use the ios version of TuneIn. There's a desktop version (aside  from within a web browser)?

I didn't even think of recording capabilities but that sounds very intriguing especially if you can use timers and set scheduling  etc..

Wonder how hard it would be to convert recorded files to MP4's?

Maybe use both Snowtape and Tunein for a while?

Snowtape captures the stream directly at whatever bitrate and format it streams at. There are lots of audio converters (like the free XLD) that will convert one audio format to another but converting one lossy format to another will cause SQ to go south quickly. Better to just play it in whatever format it is already in.

I timer record several radio programs with Snowtape. The timer options could use some beefing up but I'm hoping they address that in the upgrade.

Radium is interesting but FStream works fine for me.

dB-

How do you ad your own stations into Snowtape?

I think I have added it to Safari as an add on but I don't know how or where to access it.

No tutorials anywhere.

For what it's worth, the $10 tunein pro version also has a recording feature.

I figured out how to import a url but I could only get it to work w one station??

I also figured out how to access the radio's url in Safari (right click on the actual url and in the list is a link to add to Snowtape).
But it only worked for one station as well.

Maybe I'll have more luck w the $10 Tunein.

Not all stations streams are based on a unique URL. Some streams are applets that you launch from the main page of the station. In these cases you won't be able to copy a URL and paste it into a player.

If you post the names of the stations and the links to their websites I'll see if I have the same problems using a few Windows based players.

Even stations that present themselves as a webpage applet without any apparent URL are most often making a URL call to a stream behind the scenes, and that can usually be discovered with various webpage analyzers.

If you have some stations in mind, I can find the URL for the stream most of the time.

Steve,

What's the URL for WZLX? I tried a sniffer but could easily locate the URL for it. I'll use your finding to help train myself.

Doublej,

If WZLX 100.7 FM - Boston, MA is the one you're looking for, try:

http://3363.live.streamtheworld.com:3690/WZLXFMAAC_SC

I use Chrome and open a second tab to Chrome://net-internals to start capturing the events then initiate Play from either the station website itself or from the TuneIn website in the first tab.  Then I stop the capture and search for mp3, m3u, aac, pls, stream, etc. (which finds most streams but not all; sometimes the call letters or station name are also in the URL as they were in this case, but not always).  The stream URL will be found in a URL_REQUEST event.  However, this one was just a little trickier, as the path I found was

http://3363.live.streamtheworld.com:3690/WZLXFMAAC_SC?DIST=TuneIn

which didn't work until I edited it and deleted ?DIST=TuneIn off of the end.

Did you get the trial version? I think there are restrictions. Add URL under the File menu works in my full version. That gives me this:

I hate crippled trial versions but Snowtape may be one. At any rate I might suggest wait-and-see as the developer has announced they are working on a major update.
I mainly use Snowtape as a recorder; the free FStream works well as a bare bones tuner app for favorite stations.

Haven't been able to find a Mac "TuneIn" app, only ios. Went to the AppStore and the TuneIn site. Do you have a link? On the iPhone, TuneIn is far better than anything else I have used.

I don't think there is a Mac app for Tunein. For OSX you just go to the website and sign in.

Steve,

What's your take on the URL for KCSM?

I guessed http://radio.securenetsystems.net/v5/KCSM but it won't play in VLC player and if I open it in itunes it plays a Wyoming station

However, if I put the above URL into a browser it plays fine.
