What should I get?
« on: 6 Sep 2014, 08:14 pm »
Hello

I am new to this forum and I'm therefore not familiar with whatever etiquette you guys abide by. So forgive me if I mess up!

I listen to Dub, Roots Reggae and sometimes early 80's Funk. I love basslines by Robbie Shakespeare or Familyman Barrett or Verdine White.

I like to listen to records, preferably loud (when my wife is away) on a Thorens 124MK2 and a Thorens 125MK2. I work at home in the morning and go to the office in the afternoon if need be. I play records while I'm working, not too loud but I like to feel something still.

I have just scored an EICO 81 amp (14wpc) and I'm looking (drooling!) in front of the Omega speakers.

The room where I will place the stereo when the paint is finished drying is the living room. Typical European size = SMALL, about 12ft wide and 15 ft long, 9 ft tall.

So which model would you recommend I use. If I had the money, I'd buy them all and rotate, that's how lovely they are!

Thanks

Good Times

Go straight to the top with the Alnico XRS! IMO will handle your complex genres the best (less chance of break-up/distortion at higher volumes) and will give you the bass you need.

+1 with the XRS's.  If your looking for a monitor I would go for the Hoyt Bedford Type 1.

I agree... the Alnico XRS should be a great match for that amp too.

Awesome.  I'll be in Paris in two days.  I could have bought them with me.

Hello Guillaume,

Welcome to the Omega AudioCircle.

Looking at the type of music you like, the fact you like it loud sometimes, and your amplifier, I would suggest the Super 7 Monitor and the new (pictures coming) deepOmega 12 sub.  For the louder listening, the ferrite magnet driver in the Super 7 will take more punishment than the Alnico driver.  The deepOmega 12 will be fast and defined, with impact, which is exactly what you want for the type of music you listen to.  With the sub you can also tune the bass your room.

Thanks Rob, I've just had a very nice phone conversation with Louis and pulled the trigger on the Super 7 Ebony finish. With the money saved compared to the Anilco model, I got a Super 3 Desktop (Olive finish) which Louis suggested I couple with a Audioengine N22 amp. Which I'll do. After looking at it online with Louis, it looks like a safe bet to make.

Two weeks + shipping time (hope the French customs are in a good mood when the package reaches the French border)....

Hopefully the work in the living room will be finished and I'll be able to install the 7's, the amp, the turntable and play some records. Now which one am I going to pick first??? Since there is a break in period, I'm going to have to think hard!!! Probably will go for Kaya by Bob Marley, then Sly & Robbie present Taxi... and then Night Nurse by Gregory Isaacs.

mmmmm, it's a great time to be living on this planet.

PS = thank you very much Louis for taking the time to answer my questions with great patience.

To celebrate this wicked moment, I'd like to share with you all the bass parts that Robbie Shakespeare recorded last night for the upcoming EP by Omar Perry.

It's raw, unedited, not EQ'd, nothing done. I love this.

Hope you guys enjoy

I'll be posting stuff like this from time to time. It kinda gives a different, behind the scene, view of a record.
